China looks to the stars!

China, as well as many other countries have recently founded space programs. While each of their goals seem different, there is one common goal between us - sending men to the moon! Qiu Tu, the director of the newly formed CNSA(China National Space Agency), has released the following statement to the public:

"Space is a place like no other. It poses unique challenges, but the benefits are well worth the work, and the CNSA hopes to propel China, and indeed the rest of the world forward. We are currently developing a rocket that can launch itself into the orbit of Earth - something our smaller rockets are incapable of. Our first step is to launch communication satellites in orbit, this will allow fast, worldwide communication with almost no delay. After that, we will prepare to launch men into orbit where we can test the strains of space on a human body, and finally, we will land on the moon!"

The Director of the CNSA recently released information of five test rockets scheduled for launch this year. A excerpt of his speech:
Quote:
"We are launching five test rockets. They only carry data recorders, and can not be launched into orbit, but they are hoped to give well needed data to the R&D department for improving the safety of our Low Earth Orbit rockets."

Top Stories for the month of August, 1956:

Quote:
Brussels - (INN)

On the morning of August 8th, a fire in the mines of Marcinelle resulted in the deaths of 262 miners. At the time of the incident, 274 people were working in the colliery Bois du Cazier, also known as Puits Saint-Charles. A mining car, which was improperly positioned in the elevator cage, struck an oil pipe and electrical cables when the elevator began to ascend to the surface.

This caused a fire, which trapped the miners working in the galleries below. Of the 274 miners working that day, only twelve survived. Most of the victims were immigrants. Amongst the victims, there were 136 Italians, 95 Belgians, eight Poles, six Greeks, five Germans, five Frenchmen, three Hungarians, one Englishman, one Dutchman, one Russian, and one Ukrainian.

Rescue operations continued until August 23rd when the final verdict came from one of the rescuers: "Tutti cadaveri!" All corpses. The incident has prompted the government of Italy to issue a demand for better working conditions for the Italian guest workers in Belgium.

Bonn - (INN)

On August 6th The Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands – KPD, Communist Party of Germany, was banned today by the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. According to the High Court the ban was due to the aggressive, and combative, methods that the party used as a 'Marxist-Leninist party struggle' to achieve their goals. Even though the party has been declared illegal, it is suspected that many of its members will continue to function clandestinely, despite increased government surveillance.

London - (INN)

August 27 - Calder Hall nuclear power station in England is the first connected to the National Power Grid in the United Kingdom. This event marks this Magnox plant as the world's first nuclear power station to deliver electricity in commercial quantities.

The design is codenamed PIPPA for Pressurised Pile Producing Power and Plutonium by the UKAEA, to denote the plant's dual commercial and military role. Construction began in 1953. Calder Hall has four Magnox reactors capable of generating 60 MWe of power each. The reactors were supplied by the UKAEA and the turbines by C.A. Parsons & Company. The civil engineering contractor was Taylor Woodrow Construction.

This month, the CNS have launched two rockets, with varying success. A message sent from the director Ran Bai reads
September 19, 1956
Quote:
We launced two rockets - SR-1 and SR-2. SR-1's guidance system malfunctioned shortly after launch, and self-destructed to prevent damage to our infrastructure. The problem was caused by a bug in it's coding, and has since been fixed. The updated software, aided with flight data from SR-2's successful flight has greatly improved our Low Earth Orbit rocket's safety, and the model LEO-144 is now ready for production.

We hope to start launching prototype communication satellites in orbit by next year using the newly developed rocket. More information will become available as time goes on.

CANADA REACHES TO THE STARS!
FIRST SATELLITE ORBITS EARTH!

The Canadian Space Agency is proud to announce today that the first OPERATIONAL satellite has been put into Lower Earth Orbit. Members of the launch team watched with hopes high as the countdown reached zero. The director of the CSA, Richard Stevens, had this to say.

Quote:
This is a huge step for us as Canadians, and as human beings. This is just the first of many steps that will be taken down the road to the great beyond. With this we can learn more of our planet and begin our journey into the cosmos. I dream of the day where mankind may leave Earth's confines and venture forth into space. And I shall do everything in my power to ensure we reach that day.

According to rumor there had already been one satellite launched before but due to the procrastination of building a facility for tracking satellites, it is now just a piece of scrap metal orbiting the Earth.

China Announces Launches

February 27th, 1957
Quote:
Today, the CNSA has planned the launch of two rockets on May 1st and 10th. They are carrying a cargo of our newly designed communications satellites, that are expected to be transmitting by May 20th. These satellites will be government owned and serviced, however they will still be offered to the public.

CS-1 and CS-2 are LEO-144 rockets, and also include a set of cameras to take the first pictures, an altimeter, and thermometers. The communication package contains one high and one low frequency transmitter, two receivers, and a telephone switchboard. The orbital satellite is a strong, lightweight frame with a pair of mercury batteries to power equipment, and two small rocket paddles to maneuver or de-orbit the satellite.

Today, our two recently launched communications satellites activated flawlessly, and are now providing services to China. Our communist brethren, the USSR have also launched two of their own. We welcome their pursuit in space exploration, and hope that relations can remain stable.

While the Canadians do have a significant head start, they are just satellites, and the CNSA hopes to beat them to manned sub-orbital, and then orbital flights.

Quote:
Four days ago, disaster hit the CNSA. While the first launch of the month was a complete success, the second was much worse. CS-4; the rocket, launched fine, but on the orbital insertion, many of the fuel lines burst, and the rocket exploded. A quick review of the rocket shown many more problems with the rocket, and the LEO-144 rocket series will now be discontinued.

Work has started on designing a brand new LEO rocket, and until then no further launches will be attempted.

June 15th - Oklahoma City (INN)

Oklahomans today celebrated its semi-centennial statehood. Along with the celebrations a brand new 1957 Plymouth Belvedere has been buried in a time capsule, to be opened on June 15th, 2007.

June 21st - Ottawa - (INN)

– John Diefenbaker has been elected and becomes Canada's 13th prime minister.

June 28th - New Orleans - (INN)

Hurricane Audrey is the first major hurricane of the 1957 Atlantic hurricane season. A powerful hurricane, Audrey caused catastrophic damage across eastern Texas and western Louisiana. It is expected to affect the South Central United States as a powerful extra-tropical storm.

Before Audrey made landfall, several weather stations in eastern Texas reported winds up to 75 mph before communications were lost. Later on a weather station in Orange, Texas reported sustained wind speed of 100 mph. A storm surge of 7 feet was also reported.

The eye of Audrey made landfall south of Sabine Lake, traversed the lake and then passed over Bridge City, Texas. In Port Arthur, Texas, a barometric pressure of 966 hectopascals was recorded while Beaumont, Texas recorded a 971 hectopascals pressure reading.

Because eastern Texas was on the weaker side of the storm, there was only moderate damage. In Port Arthur, there was damage to trees and power lines and parts of Highway 87 were damaged. Offshore, nine people drowned when their boat sank during the storm.

In Cameron, Louisiana, waves as high as 10 feet were reported offshore. On Lake Charles, a storm tide of 7 feet was recorded while surges up to 12 feet were reported in other locations. A 958 hectopascals pressure reading was recorded in Hackberry, while the city of Sulphur recorded sustained winds of 105 mph. Damage in Louisiana was catastrophic; 60-80 percent of the homes and businesses from Cameron to Grand Chenier were either destroyed or severely damaged.

The storm surge damage path extended for 25 miles. Two tornadoes were reported as the storm made landfall, one near New Orleans and the other near Arnaudville. In all, there were over 300 people killed in Louisiana, while 40,000 others were left homeless by the storm.

Top Stories for the month of July, 1957:

Quote:
July 1 - Washington (INN)

The International Geophysical Year (IGY) was annnounced today. This represents a thawing of international tensions and is expected to run from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958. It marks the end, after Joseph Stalin's death last year, of a long period when scientific interchange between East and West was seriously interrupted.

As many as 67 countries are expected to participate, amongst which are expected are all of the major nations, with the exception of the People's Republic of China. They are protesting against the participation of the Republic of China, known them as the breakaway province of Taiwan.

Both Eastern and Western nations agreed to nominate the Belgian, Marcel Nicolet, as the secretary general of the associated international organization.

The IGY will encompass eleven Earth sciences: aurora and airglow, cosmic rays, geomagnetism, gravity, ionospheric physics, longitude and latitude determinations - precision mapping, meteorology, oceanography, seismology, and solar activity.

July 11 – Tehran (INN)

Karīm al-Hussainī became Aga Khan IV upon assuming the Imamat of the Ismailis on July 11, 1957, at the age of 20, succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan - Aga Khan III. In his will, his grandfather stated the conditions that led him to select his grandson as successor to the Ismaili Imamat:

In view of the fundamentally altered conditions in the world in very recent years due to the great changes that have taken place, including the discoveries of atomic science, I am convinced that it is in the best interests of the Ismaili community that I should be succeeded by a young man who has been brought up and developed during recent years and in the midst of the new age, and who brings a new outlook on life to his office.

Prince Karim Aga Khan IV is the 49th Ismaili Imam, claiming lineage to Ali, cousin of Muhammad, and his wife Fatimah, Muhammad's daughter.

July 14 – Cairo (INN)

Rawya Ateya takes her seat in the National Assembly of Egypt, thereby becoming the first female parliamentarian in the Arab world.

July 16 – Washington

On July 16, 1957, Marine Major John Glenn completed the first supersonic transcontinental flight in a Vought F8U-1P Crusader.

The flight from the Naval Air Station in Los Alamitos, California, to Floyd Bennett Field, New York, took 3 hours, 23 minutes and 8.3 seconds. As he passed over his hometown, a child in the neighborhood reportedly ran to the Glenn house shouting "Johnny dropped a bomb! Johnny dropped a bomb! Johnny dropped a bomb!" as the sonic boom shook the town.

Project Bullet, the name of the mission, included both the first transcontinental flight to average supersonic speed and the first continuous transcontinental panoramic photograph of the United States. Major Glenn received his fifth Distinguished Flying Cross for the mission.

July 29 – Vienna (INN)

Today the opening of the International Atomic Energy Agency - IAEA - was announced. It is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. Although established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute, the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council.

The IAEA has its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The IAEA has two Regional Safeguards Offices which are located in Toronto, Canada, and in Tokyo, Japan. The IAEA also has two liaison offices which are located in New York City, United States, and in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition, the IAEA has three laboratories located in Vienna and Seibersdorf, Austria, and in Monaco.

The IAEA will serve as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and nuclear power worldwide. The programs of the IAEA will encourage the development of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, provide international safeguards against misuse of nuclear technology and nuclear materials, and promote nuclear safety, including radiation protection, and nuclear security standards and their implementation.

In 1953, the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, proposed the creation of an international body to both regulate and promote the peaceful use of atomic power, in his Atoms for Peace address to the UN General Assembly.

In September 1954, the United States once again proposed to the General Assembly the creation of an international agency to take control of fissile material, which could be used either for nuclear power or for nuclear weapons. This agency would establish a kind of 'nuclear bank'. The United States also called for an international scientific conference on all of the peaceful aspects of nuclear power.

By November 1954, it had become clear that the Soviet Union would reject any international custody of its fissile material, but that a clearing house for nuclear transactions might be possible.

From August 8 to August 20, 1955, the United Nations held the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland.

During 1956, an IAEA Statute Conference was held to draft the founding documents for the IAEA, and the IAEA Statute was completed at a conference in early 1957.

Former U.S. Congressman W. Sterling Cole will serve as the IAEA's first Director General.

August 4 – Nürburg (INN)

Juan Manuel Fangio, driving for Maserati, won the Formula One German Grand Prix at Nürburg today, clinching with 4 wins so far this season, his record 5th world drivers championship, including his 4th consecutive championship, also a record.

August 21 – Washington (INN)

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower today announced that the US would begin a 2-year moriatorium against nuclear testing.

August 28 – Washington (INN)

United States Senator Strom Thurmond (D-SC) vehemently supports racial segregation and proved it with the longest filibuster ever conducted by a single senator to date, speaking for a total of 24 hours and 18 minutes in an unsuccessful attempt to derail the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

Cots were brought in from a nearby hotel for the legislators to sleep on while Thurmond discussed increasingly irrelevant and obscure topics, including his grandmother's biscuit recipe. Other Southern senators, who had agreed as part of a compromise not to filibuster this bill, were upset with Thurmond because they thought his defiance made them look incompetent to their constituents.

August 31 – London (INN)

The Federation of Malaya gained its independence from the United Kingdom today. Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan will become the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaya.

From 1946 to 1948, the 11 states formed a single British crown colony known as the Malayan Union. Due to opposition from Malay nationalists, the Union was disbanded and replaced by the Federation of Malaya, which restored the symbolic positions of the rulers of the Malay states.

Within the Federation, while the Malay states were protectorates of the United Kingdom, Penang and Malacca remained British colonial territories. Like the Malayan Union before it, the Federation does not include Singapore, despite its traditional connections with Malaya.

The Federation of Malaya Agreement was formulated by the British–Malay Pleno Conference that took place between June and December of 1946. At the end of the meeting, the Pleno Conference produced a 100-page "Blue Book" for independence.

The Federation of Malaya Agreement was signed on the 21st of January 1948, at King House by the Malay rulers, and by Sir Edward Gent as the representative of the British government. The Agreement superseded the Agreement creating the Malayan Union, and prepared for the establishment of the Federation of Malaya on 1 February 1948. The position of the Malay rulers was also restored.

The Federation of Malaya will consist of the following states: Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, and Terengganu.

September 1 – Kingston (INN)

At 11:30 PM today, near Kendal, Manchester three shrill whistle blasts signalled that the engineer of the diesel hauled train of 12 wooden carriages, which had left Kingston for Montego Bay had lost control of the train, and it derailed minutes later at speed. 200 people lost their lives while 700 had sustained injuries in the worst transport disaster in Jamaica's history, and the second worst rail disaster in the world.

The cause of the accident has been determined to be the closure of an angled wheel, brake, cock, with survivors suggesting that the pickpockets, who had been riding the tourist swollen train, had tampered with the brakes while riding on the carriage platforms. Confidence in the Government run Jamacian Railway Corporation has been shaken due to the extreme amount of looting and robbing of the dead and injured that had occurred after the crash.

There is talk in Kingston of divesting the government of the Railroad in favor of it going into the private sector.

September 4 - Little Rock (INN)

Today Arkansas National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Marion Johnson told nine black students who were attempting to enter Central High School to return home.

This whole sorry affair has come about due to a series of legal proceedings where the Federal District Court has ordered the Little Rock School District to proceed with its integration plans when the school opened on September 3.

Shamefully, for the State of Arkansas, Governor Orval Faubus, ordered the Arkansas National Guard to Little Rock Central High School on September 2 because he said he had evidence that there was "...imminent danger of tumult, riot, breach of peace, and the doing of violence to persons and property." The Governor initially ordered to state duty the State Headquarters Detachment, the Base Detachment at Adams Field and any other units the Adjutant General felt necessary to "accomplish the mission of maintaining or restoring law and order. Also to... "preserve the peace, health, safety, and security of the citizens of Pulaski County, Arkansas."

Major General Sherman T. Clinger, the Adjutant General of Arkansas, assembled a force of 289 soldiers under command of Lieutenant Colonel Marion Johnson.

September 21 - Oslo (INN)

Today Olav V, Alexander Edward Christian Frederik; 2 July 1903, was crowned the King of Norway. A member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Olav was born in the United Kingdom as the son of King Haakon VII of Norway and Queen Maud of Norway.

He became Crown Prince and heir-apparent to the throne of Norway when his father was elected king in 1905. He is the first heir to the Norwegian throne to be brought up in Norway since Olav IV, and his parents made sure he was given as Norwegian an upbringing as possible.

In preparation for his royal duties, he attended both civilian and military schools. In 1929, he married his first and second cousin Princess Märtha of Sweden. During World War II his leadership was much appreciated and he was appointed Norwegian Chief of Defense in 1944. He is the last surviving grandchild of Edward VII of the United Kingdom and Alexandra of Denmark.

September 21 - Bonn (INN)

On the morning of September 21st. the Pamir, one of the famous Flying P-Liner sailing ships of the German shipping company F. Laeisz, was caught in Hurricane Carrie before shortening sails. It is thought that because the radio officer had also been given substantial administrative tasks, to save the money required for another officer's position, he had likely not received any of the radio storm warnings. The Pamir had not responded to radio hails by ships that had sighted her earlier in the voyage.

According to the commission set up to investigate the sinking, the water that entered her holds caused her to list further and the cargo of grain to shift, which aggravated the list.

From the descriptions of the survivors it is surmised that the captain did not order the counter flooding of her grain-filled ballast tanks, which would have helped her to right herself again. Once she listed too severely, the lifeboats could not be deployed anymore because her port side was under water and her starboard side was raised to an angle that did not allow use of the boats.

The Pamir was able to send a distress signal before capsizing at 13:03 local time, and sinking after drifting keel-up for 30 minutes in the middle of the Atlantic, 600 nautical miles west-southwest of the Azores at position. Many sharks were later seen near the last reported position of the ship.

A nine-day search for survivors was organized by the United States Coast Guard cutter USCGC Absecon, but only four crewmen and two cadets were rescued alive, from two of the lifeboats. It was reported that many of the 86 men aboard had managed to reach the boats, but most died in the next three days due to the lack of provisions. As none of the officers nor the captain survived, the reasons for the capsizing remained uncertain.

September 24 –

On Monday, September 23, eight black students entered Central High. When word spread that the students were inside, a crowd of approximately 1,000 gathered outside of the school. There was a concern that the police would not be able to handle the crowd, but tensions eased when the black students were removed from Central. A force of 150 Guardsmen had been assembled and placed on a five minute notice to assist the police at Central, but they were not called upon.

Today, after a call from Woodrow Nilson Mann, the Mayor of Little Rock, who asked President Eisenhower to send federal troops to enforce integration and protect the nine students, President Dwight D. Eisenhower federalized the entire Arkansas National Guard while ordering unit members to begin assembling at their home stations throughout the night.

By order of the president, the National Guard is directed to support the integration rather than block it as the units had been before. On the 24th, elements of the 101st Airborne Division began arriving at Little Rock to provide additional support and took up positions around Central High. That same day, Adjutant General Clinger met with the commander of the Arkansas Military District and was ordered to assemble a force at Camp Robinson for duty at Central High. Those units were:

1st Battalion, 153rd Infantry Regiment
3rd Battalion, 153rd Infantry Regiment
39th Military Police Company
Company D, 212th Signal Battalion

This force, consisting of 107 officers, fifteen warrant officers, and 1,184 enlisted men, closed in on Camp Robinson just after noon on the 25th. The National Guard soldiers were told, "Our mission is to enforce the orders of the federal courts with respect to the attendance at the public schools of Little Rock of all those who are properly enrolled, and to maintain law and order while doing so… Our individual feelings towards those court orders should have no influence on our execution of the mission." One Arkansas Guard major was quoted as saying, "We have been ordered to maintain the peace and that is what we intend to do."

The remainder of the Arkansas National Guard units remained at their home stations, conducting daily formations and training, and are not scheduled to take part in the actual operations around Central High School.

October 4 - In the real world this is the launch date for Sputnik, man's first artificial satellite.

October 4 - Ottawa (INN)

Today the Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was displayed for the first time to the media. The Arrow is a delta-winged interceptor aircraft, designed and built by Avro Aircraft Limited in Malton, Ontario, Canada, as the culmination of a design study that began in 1953. Considered to be both an advanced technical and aerodynamic achievement for the Canadian aviation industry, the CF-105 holds the promise of Mach 2 speeds at altitudes exceeding 50,000 ft, and is intended to serve as the Royal Canadian Air Force's - RCAF - primary interceptor in the 1960's and beyond.

October 10 - Washington (INN)

Today U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower apologized to Komla Agbeli Gbedemah, the Minister for Finance in the Nkrumah government in Ghana, after he was refused service in a Howard Johnson's restaurant in Dover, Delaware. He is reported to have told the staff: "The people here are of a lower social status than I am but they can drink here and we can't. You can keep the orange juice and the change, but this is not the last you have heard of this." Some sources suspect that the incident, which resulted in some publicity, may have been engineered by Gbedemah's secretary. None-the-less, it resulted in Gbedemah being invited to breakfast at the White House.

October 10 - London (INN)

Today a fire at the Windscale power station in the UK has released radioactive material into the surrounding environment, including Iodine-131.

In order for Britain to engage in a nuclear weapons treaty with the US, it had to demonstrate that it was a technological equal. The Windscale facility was built to produce plutonium for the British atom bomb. After the successful explosion of the atom bomb, the US designed and exploded a thermonuclear bomb requiring tritium. Britain did not have any facility to produce tritium and decided to use the Windscale piles.

Tritium can be produced in nuclear reactors by neutron activation of lithium-6. Higher neutron fluxes were needed for this rather than for producing plutonium and it was decided to reduce the size of the cooling fins, totalling approximately 500,000 individual fins, on the aluminium fuel cartridges, thereby reducing the absorption of neutrons by this aluminium.

By pushing the first-generation design of the Windscale facility beyond its intended limits, tritium could be produced at the cost of a reduced safety factor. After a first successful production run of tritium in Pile 1, the heat problem was presumed to be negligible and full-scale production began, but by raising the temperature of the reactor beyond the design specifications, the scientists had altered the normal distribution of heat in the core, causing "hot spots" to develop in Pile 1. These spikes of heat went unnoticed by the scientists because the thermocouples used to measure the core temperatures were positioned based on the original heat distribution design and were not measuring the hottest parts of the reactor, leading to the falsely optimistic readings.

On the 7th of October, operators began an annealing cycle for Windscale Pile 1 by switching the cooling fans to low power and stabilizing the reactor at low power. The next day, to carry out the annealing, the operators increased the power to the reactor. When it appeared that the annealing process was taking place, control rods were lowered back into the core to shut down the reactor, but it soon became apparent that the Wigner energy release was not spreading through the core, but dwindling prematurely.

The operators withdrew the control rods again to apply a second nuclear heating and complete the annealing process. Because some thermocouples were not in the hottest parts of the core, the operators were not aware that some areas were considerably hotter than others. This, and the second heating, are suspected of having been the deciding factors behind the fire, although the precise cause remains unknown.

Early in the morning on the 10th of October, it was suspected that something unusual was going on. The temperature in the core was supposed to gradually fall as the Wigner release ended, but the monitoring equipment showed something more ambiguous and one thermocouple indicated that the core temperature was instead rising.

In an effort to help cool the pile, the airflow was increased. This fed more oxygen to the fire and lifted radioactive materials up the chimney and into the filter galleries. It was then that workers in the control room realised that the radiation monitoring devices which measured activity at the top of the discharge stack were at full scale reading. In accordance with written guidelines, the foreman declared a site emergency.

The operators tried to examine the pile with a remote scanner but it had jammed. Tom Hughes, second in command to the Reactor Manager, suggested examining the reactor personally and so he and another operator went to the charge face of the reactor, clad in protective gear. A fuel channel inspection plug was taken out close to a thermocouple registering high temperatures and it was then that the operators saw that the fuel was red hot.

"An inspection plug was taken out," said Tom Hughes in a later interview, "and we saw, to our complete horror, four channels of fuel glowing bright cherry red."

There was no doubt that the reactor was now on fire, and had been for almost 48 hours. Reactor Manager Tom Tuohy donned full protective equipment and breathing apparatus and scaled the 80 feet to the top of the reactor building, where he stood atop the reactor lid to examine the rear of the reactor, the discharge face. Here he reported a dull red luminescence visible, lighting up the void between the back of the reactor and the rear containment.

Red hot fuel cartridges were glowing in the fuel channels on the discharge face. He returned to the reactor upper containment several times throughout the incident, at the height of which a fierce conflagration was raging from the discharge face and playing on the back of the reinforced concrete containment — concrete whose specifications required that it be kept below a certain temperature to prevent its disintegration and collapse.

The operators were unsure what to do about the fire. First, they tried to blow the flames out by putting the fans onto full power and increasing the cooling, but this only fanned the flames. Tom Hughes and his colleague had already created a fire break by ejecting some undamaged fuel cartridges from around the blaze and Tom Tuohy suggested trying to eject some from the heart of the fire, by bludgeoning the melted cartridges through the reactor and into the cooling pond behind it with scaffolding poles.

This proved impossible and the fuel rods refused to budge, no matter how much force was applied. The poles were withdrawn with their ends red hot and, once, a pole was returned red hot and dripping with molten metal. Hughes knew this had to be molten irradiated uranium and this caused serious radiation problems on the charge hoist itself.

"It - the exposed fuel channel - was white hot," said Hughes' colleague on the charge hoist with him, "it was just white hot. Nobody, I mean, nobody, can believe how hot it could possibly be."

Next, the operators tried to extinguish the fire using carbon dioxide. The new gas-cooled Calder Hall reactors on the site had just received a delivery of 25 tons of liquid carbon dioxide and this was rigged up to the charge face of Windscale Pile 1, but there were problems getting it to the fire in useful quantities. The fire was so hot that it stripped the oxygen from what carbon dioxide could be applied.

"So we got this rigged up," Hughes recounted, "and we had this poor little tube of carbon dioxide and I had absolutely no hope it was going to work."

On the morning of Friday 11 October, when the fire was at its worst, eleven tons of uranium were ablaze. Temperatures were becoming extreme, one thermocouple registered 1,300°C, and the biological shield around the stricken reactor was now in severe danger of collapse. Faced with this crisis, the operators decided to use water. This was risky, as molten metal oxidises in contact with water, stripping oxygen from the water molecules and leaving free hydrogen, which could mix with incoming air and explode, tearing open the weakened containment.

Faced with a lack of other options, the operators decided to go ahead with the plan. About a dozen fire hoses were hauled to the charge face of the reactor; their nozzles were cut off and the lines themselves connected to scaffolding poles and fed into fuel channels about a metre above the heart of the fire. Tuohy once again hauled himself atop the reactor shielding and ordered the water to be turned on, listening carefully at the inspection holes for any sign of a hydrogen reaction as the pressure was increased. However the water was unsuccessful in extinguishing the fire, requiring further measures to be taken.

Tom Tuohy then ordered everyone out of the reactor building except himself and the Fire Chief in order to shut off all cooling and ventilating air entering the reactor. Tuohy then climbed up several times and reported watching the flames leaping from the discharge face slowly dying away. During one of the inspections, he found that the inspection plates, which were removed with a metal hook to facilitate viewing of the discharge face of the core, were stuck fast. This, he reported, was due to the fire trying to suck air in from wherever it could.

"I have no doubt it was even sucking air in through the chimney at this point to try and maintain itself," he remarked in an interview.

Finally he managed to pull the inspection plate away and was greeted with the sight of the fire dying away.

"First the flames went, then the flames reduced and the glow began to die down," he described, "I went up to check several times until I was satisfied that the fire was out. I did stand to one side, sort of hopefully," he went on to say, "but if you're staring straight at the core of a shut down reactor you're going to get quite a bit of radiation."

Water was kept flowing through the pile for a further 24 hours until it was completely cold.

The reactor tank itself has remained sealed since the accident and still contains about 15 tons of uranium fuel. It was thought that the remaining fuel could still reignite if disturbed, due to the presence of pyrophoric uranium hydride formed in the original water dousing. The pile is not scheduled for final decommissioning until 2037.

There was a release of radioactive material that spread across the UK and Europe. The fire released an estimated 740 terabecquerels - 20,000 curies - of iodine-131, as well as 22 TBq - 594 curies - of caesium-137 and 12,000 TBq - 324,000 curies - of xenon-133, amongst other radionuclides.

October 11 - London (INN)

The Jodrell Bank Observatory, a British observatory that hosts a number of telescopes, Today announced the opening of the largest radio telescope in the world. The Radio Telescope at Jodrell Observatory measures 250 feet in diameter, and as such is the largest steerable radio telescope in the world. The telescope is located near Goostrey, Cheshire in the north-west of England and is part of the Jodrell Bank Center for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester.

The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and iss heavily involved with the tracking of space probes.

October 23 – Madrid (Inn)

Today Morocco began an invasion of Ifni, a Spanish Colony. Violent demonstrations against foreign rule erupted in Ifni on April 10, followed by civil strife and the widespread murder of those loyal to Spain. In response, Generalissimo Franco has dispatched two battalions of the Spanish Legion, Spain's elite fighting force, to El Aaiún in June.

Spanish military mobilization resulted in the Moroccan army converging near Ifni. On October 23rd, two villages on the outskirts of Sidi Ifni, Goulimine and Bou Izarguen, were occupied by 1,500 Moroccan soldiers.

We will be keeping a close eye on this ongoing crisis.

October 25 – Washington (INN)

Albert Anastasia, born Umberto Anastasio, September 26, 1902 – October 25, 1957, was one of the most ruthless and feared Cosa Nostra mobsters in American history. A founder of the American Mafia, Anastasia ran Murder, Inc. during the prewar era and was boss of the Gambino crime family during most of the 1950s. Anastasia died today in what is probably the most sensational assassination in mob history to date.

On the morning of October 25, Anastasia entered the barber shop of the Park Sheraton Hotel at 870 7th Avenue, on 56th Street and 7th Avenue, in Midtown Manhattan. Anastasia's bodyguard parked the car in an underground garage and then took a walk outside, leaving Anastasia unprotected. As Anastasia relaxed in the barber chair, two men, with scarves covering their faces, rushed in, shoved the barber out of the way, and fired at Anastasia. After the first volley of bullets, Anastasia allegedly lunged at his killers. However, the stunned Anastasia had actually attacked the gunmen's reflections in the wall mirror of the barber shop. The gunmen continued firing and Albert Anastasia finally fell to the floor, dead.

The Anastasia murder has generated a tremendous amount of public interest and has sparked a high profile police investigation. Per New York Times journalist Selwyn Raab, "The vivid image of a helpless victim swathed in white towels was stamped in the public memory." However, so far nobody has been charged in this case. As of now the leading police theories on who killed Anastasia has centered on Profaci crime family mobster Joe Gallo, the Patriarca crime family of Providence, Rhode Island, and certain drug dealers with the Gambino family.

The Profaci theory is that Genovese gave the Anastasia murder contract to Joe Profaci, who passed it on to mobster "Crazy Joe" Gallo. Gallo then performed the assassination with some of his crewmembers. At one point, Gallo boasted to an associate: "You can just call the five of us the barbershop quintet."

However, detractors say that it is illogical for Profaci to kill Anastasia. Profaci was allied with Bonanno and Anastasia on the Commission against Genovese, Costello, and Thomas Lucchese. By killing Anastasia, Profaci was eliminating an ally and gaining a potential enemy in Gambino.

The Patriarca theory is that Anastasia's killers came from the Patriarca Family in Providence / Boston. Genovese had traditionally strong ties to Patriarca boss Raymond L.S. Patriarca. In addition, it made sense to use out-of-town hitters. The Patriarca hit team was allegedly led by mobster John (Jackie) "Mad Dog" Nazarian.

The drug dealers theory is that Gambino used some Gambino drug dealers from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to kill Anastasia, including Stephen Armone, Steven Grammauta, and Arnold Wittenberg.

November 1 - Washington (INN)

Today The Mackinac Bridge was opened for the first time. The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension type bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac to connect the non-contiguous Upper and Lower peninsulas of the state of Michigan. The bridge is the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the world and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western hemisphere.

The Mackinac Bridge carries US Highway 27 and the Lakes Michigan and Huron components of the Great Lakes Circle Tours across the straits and connects the city of St. Ignace on the north end with the village of Mackinaw City on the south.

Envisioned since the 1880s, the bridge was designed by engineer David B. Steinman and only after many decades of struggles could the construction begin.

November 3

In the real world Today the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, with the first animal to orbit the Earth (a dog named Laika) on board.

November 7 – Washington (INN)

Deterrence & Survival in the Nuclear Age is the report of the Security Resources Panel of the President's Science Advisory Committee, presented to President Eisenhower today. It is known as the Gaither Report after the panel's chairman Horace Rowan Gaither. The report recommends a significant strengthening of U.S. strategic offensive and defensive military capabilities.

While the President had asked for an evaluation of fallout potential and the effectiveness of blast shelters, the opening page of the report states that their purpose is to “form a broadbrush opinion of the relative value of various active and passive measures to protect the civilian populations in case of nuclear attack and its aftermath.”

This look at active protective measures relegated fallout shelters to a secondary position in a report that is now concentrated on nuclear deterrence. The rationale for this change in view can be found in their assertion that the Soviet Union, with its expedient development of military technology, has already exceeded the technical achievements made by the U.S. in ICBM research.

November 15 - London (INN)

A plane crash today on the Isle of Wight has left 43 dead.

November 15 - Belgrade

Today, Premier Tito, the leader of Yugoslavia, has announced the end of an economic boycott of Francisco Franco's Spain. Although it was stressed that this does not reinstitute any diplomatic relations.

November 21 - Madrid

The Spanish intelligence service in Ifni has reported that attacks were imminent by Moroccans operating out of Tafraout.

November 23 - Madrid

Today Spain has announced that Spanish lines of communication were cut, and a force of 2,000 Moroccans has stormed Spanish garrisons and armories in and around Ifni.

Although the Moroccan drive into Sidi Ifni was easily repulsed, two nearby Spanish outposts were abandoned in the face of enemy attacks and many others remained under heavy siege.

Meanwhile at Tiluin, 60 Tiradores de Ifni, indigenous infantry with Spanish officers and specialist personnel, struggle to stave off a force of hundreds of Moroccans.

November 25 - Madrid (INN)

Today General Franco has authorized a relief attempt for the colony of Ifni. A fleet of five CASA 2.111 bombers, Spanish-built variants of the Heinkel He-111, bombed enemy positions, while an equal number of C.A.S.A. 352 transports, Spanish-built versions of the Junkers Ju-523M, dropped a force of 75 paratroopers into the outpost.

November 30 – Jakarta (INN)

Today an assassination attempt was made by grenade attack against the President of Indonesia, Sukarno, born Kusno Sosrodihardjo 6 June 1901, when he was visiting a school function in Cikini, Central Jakarta. Six children were killed, but Sukarno did not suffer any serious wounds. The perpetrators were members of the Darul Islam extremist group, under the order of its leader Sekarmadji Maridjan Kartosuwirjo. The reason given for the attempt was the increase of military control over Indonesia.

From December 1956 to January 1957, regional military commanders in North Sumatra, Central Sumatra, and South Sumatra provinces took over local government control. They declared a series of military councils which will run their respective areas and refused to accept orders from Jakarta. A similar regional military movement took control of North Sulawesi on March 1957. They demanded the elimination of communist influence in the government, equal share in government revenues, and reinstatement of Sukarno-Hatta duumvirate.

Faced with this serious challenge to the unity of the republic, Sukarno declared martial law on 14 March 1957. He appointed a non-partisan prime minister Djuanda Kartawidjaja, while the military was in the hands of his loyalist General Nasution. Nasution increasingly shared Sukarno's views on the negative impact of western democracy on Indonesia, and he foresaw greater role for the military to bring much-needed discipline to the country.

CNSA Test Flights Successful!

Quote:
The two rockets that were launched this month have been astounding successes, giving the glorious people of China valuable data and experience in capsule design, and further improving the safety of existing capsules. The CNSA has deemed them safe enough for a larger test - sending monkeys into space. This will serve not only to gather valuable data on the effects of living creatures in space, allowing our great nation to later send men into space, it will further improve the safety of the capsules before a final model is completed.

Several launches have already been scheduled, and the rockets will launch in the first half of next year.

Top Stories for the month of December, 1957:

Quote:
December 1 – Jakarta (INN)

Today Sukarno, President of Indonesia, announced the nationalization of 246 Dutch businesses. The Indonesian president began to take concrete steps to enforce his authority over the country. The nationalization of the 246 Dutch companies was due, according to Sukarno, to them dominating the Indonesian economy. Most notably are the NHM, Royal Dutch Shell subsidiary Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, Escomptobank, Internatio, Geo Wehry & Co, and Jacobson & Berg.

December 1 - Madrid (INN)

It was learned today that the Spanish attempt to relieve Telata was decidedly less then successful. Leaving Sidi Ifni on November 24th aboard several old trucks, a platoon of the Spanish Legion paratroop battalion under Captain Ortiz de Zárate made poor progress through difficult terrain. This problem was compounded by frequent Moroccan ambushes, which by the next day had left several men wounded and forced the Spaniards off of the road. On November 26th, food ran out. The Spanish, low on ammunition, resumed the march, only to dig in again in the face of repeated enemy attacks.

Rations were dropped from airplane, but casualties continued to mount; amongst the dead was Captain Ortiz de Zárate.

December 2 - Madrid (INN)

Today a column of Spanish infantry, amongst them the erstwhile defenders of Telata, broke through the Moroccan lines and drove the enemy off. The survivors of the paratroop battalion set foot in Sidi Ifni once more on December 5th. The company had suffered two dead and fourteen wounded.

Initial Moroccan attacks have been generally successful. In the space of two weeks, the Moroccans and their tribal allies have asserted control over most of Ifni, isolating inland Spanish units from the capitol. Simultaneous attacks have been launched throughout Spanish Sahara, overrunning garrisons and ambushing convoys and patrols.

December 3 - Madrid (INN)

Today Spanish soldiers of the Spanish Legion's 6th battalion arrived, broke the siege and retook the Telata airfield. All military and civilian personnel were then evacuated overland to Sidi Ifni.

Consequently, Moroccan units, resupplied and greatly reinforced, endeavored to surround and besiege Sidi Ifni, hoping to incite a popular uprising. But, according to our sources, the Moroccans have underestimated the strength of the Spanish defenses in Sidi Ifni. We are told that Spain can keep the colony supplied from the sea by the Spanish Navy and the SPanish Army is well dug in, having invested large sums of money investing in miles of trenches and forward outposts. It is believed that Sidi Ifni, boasts around 7,500 defenders and may prove impregnable to the Moroccan troops. We expect a long siege to develop.

December 4 –

Today the crash on the British railway system occurred just outside of St. Johns railway station in Lewisham, south London. Ninety people were killed and 173 injured.

The accident occurred during cold and very foggy conditions that caused severe disruption to train services in the London area. The fog is thought to have been especially dense in the cutting between New Cross and St Johns, with the driver of the 5.18pm electric train from Charing Cross to Hayes reporting that visibility was reduced to 20 yards or less in some places. Due to the uncertainty of the signaller in Parks Bridge junction signal box as to the destination of this train, it was held at a signal soon after St Johns station and stopped with its last carriage under the flyover carrying the Lewisham to Nunhead line.

A few minutes later, at 6.20pm, it was hit from behind by the delayed 4.56pm steam train from Cannon Street to Ramsgate, hauled by Bulleid Pacific engine 34066 ‘Spitfire’. The eighth and ninth coaches of the ten-coach Hayes train were telescoped together, with the ninth riding up over the underframe of the eighth and destroying its body completely. Behind, the tender and first coach of the steam train were derailed and struck one of the supports of the Lewisham-Nunhead flyover. The flyover buckled immediately and collapsed onto the first three coaches, crushing two of them almost flat.

December 5 –

Today President Sukarno of Indonesia signed an order which expelled the 326,000 Dutch citizens remaining in Indonesia while confiscating their properties, due to the failure by the Dutch government to continue negotiations on the fate of the Netherlands portion of New Guinea, as was promised in the 1949 Round Table Conference.

December 6 – Cape Canaveral (INN)

Today Vanguard TV3, the first attempt of the United States to launch a satellite into orbit around the Earth blew up on its launch pad. It was a small satellite designed to test the launch capabilities of the three-stage Vanguard rocket and study the effects of the environment on a satellite and its systems in Earth orbit. It was also to be used to obtain geodetic measurements through orbit analysis.

At its launch attempt at Cape Canaveral, the booster ignited and began to rise; but about two seconds after liftoff, after rising about four feet, the rocket lost thrust and began to fall back to the launch pad. As it settled the fuel tanks ruptured and exploded, destroying the rocket and severely damaging the launch pad. The Vanguard satellite was thrown clear and landed on the ground a short distance away with its transmitters still sending out a beacon signal. The satellite was damaged, however, and could not be reused.

The exact cause of the accident has not been determined with certainty, but the commonly accepted explanation is that low fuel tank pressure during the start procedure allowed some of the burning fuel in the combustion chamber to leak into the fuel system through the injector head before full propellant pressure was obtained from the turbopump.

December 10 – Ottawa (INN)

Today Canadian diplomat Lester B. Pearson received the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in defusing the Suez Crisis through the United Nations. The selection committee claimed that Pearson had "saved the world." The United Nations Emergency Force was Pearson's creation. Leaders of the United States, France, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain all had vested interests in the natural resources around the Suez Canal. Pearson was able to organize these leaders by way of a five-day fly-around, and was by effect responsible for the development of the structure for the United Nations Security Council.

January 12 - Madrid (INN)

Our sources in Madrid have indicated that a Brigade of the Saharan Liberation Army has attacked the Spanish garrison at El Aaiún. The initial reports are that the SLA has been beaten back and forced into retreat by the Spaniards, while the Spanish army turned its efforts to the southeast. Another opportunity presented itself to the SLA the next day at Edchera, where two companies of the 13th Legionary Battalion were conducting a reconnaissance mission. Slipping unseen into the large dunes near the Spanish positions, the Moroccans opened fire.

Ambushed, the Spanish Legionaries fought to maintain their unit cohesion. Reports indicate that this attack was also drived off by the Spanish with mortar and machine gun fire. Notable fighting was seen by the 1st platoon, which stubbornly denied ground to the Moroccans until heavy losses forced it to withdraw. The bloody attacks continued until nightfall, and were fiercely resisted by the Spanish, who inflicted heavy casualties on the SLA. By nightfall the Moroccans were too scattered and depleted in men to continue their assault, and fled into the darkness.

Top Stories for the month of February, 1958:

February 1 – Cairo (INN)

It was announced today that Egypt and Syria will unite to form the United Arab Republic. The United Arab Republic is a sovereign union between Egypt and Syria. The UAR's flag will be based on the Arab Liberation Flag of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, but with two stars to represent the two parts.

February 5 - Cairo (INN)

Gamel Abdel Nasser is nominated as the first president of the United Arab Republic.

February 5 - Washington (INN)

Today it was announced by the US Air Force that they have lost a 7,600 pound Mark 15 hydrogen bomb, in the waters off Savannah, Georgia after a mid-air collision.

The B-47 bomber was reported to be on a simulated combat mission from Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. It was carrying a single 7,600-pound hydrogen bomb. At about 2:00 AM, the B-47 collided with an F-86 Sabre. The F-86 crashed after the pilot ejected from the plane, but the B-47, despite being damaged, remained airborne, albeit barely.

The crew requested permission to jettison the bomb in order to reduce weight and prevent the bomb from exploding during an emergency landing. Permission was granted and the bomb was jettisoned at 7,200 feet while the bomber was traveling about 200 knots. The crew did not see an explosion when the bomb struck the sea. They managed to land B-47 safely at Hunter Air Force Base.

The 12-foot long Mark 15 bomb weighs 7,600 pounds and bears the serial number 47782. It contains 400 pounds of conventional high explosives and highly enriched uranium. The Air Force maintains that the bomb's nuclear capsule, used to initiate the nuclear reaction, was removed prior to its flight aboard the B-47.

As noted in the Atomic Energy Commission "Form AL-569 Temporary Custodian Receipt for maneuvers" signed by the aircraft commander, the bomb contained a simulated 150 pound cap which was made of lead. Never-the-less, a study of the Strategic Air Command documents indicates that Alert Force test flights - with the Mark 15 payloads - are not authorized to fly with nuclear capsules on board.

February 6 – London (INN)

Today seven Manchester United footballers are amongst the 21 people killed in West Germany on the return flight from a European Cup game in Yugoslavia. 23 people survived the crash, but four of them, including manager Matt Busby and players Johnny Berry and Duncan Edwards, are in serious condition.

The Munich air disaster occurred when British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport in Munich, West Germany. On board the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the "Busby Babes", along with a number of supporters and journalists.

Twenty of the 44 people on board the aircraft died in the crash. The injured, some of whom had been knocked unconscious, were taken to the Rechts der Isar Hospital in Munich where three more died, resulting in a total of 23 fatalities with 21 survivors.

The team was returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, against the Red Star Belgrade team, but had to make a stop in Munich for refuelling, as a non-stop trip from Belgrade to Manchester was out of the "Elizabethan" class Airspeed Ambassador aircraft's range. After refuelling, the pilots, Captains James Thain and Kenneth Rayment, attempted to take off twice, but had to abandon both attempts due to boost surging in the port engine.

Fearing that they would get too far behind schedule, Captain Thain rejected an overnight stay in Munich in favor of a third take-off attempt. By the time of the third attempt, it had begun to snow, causing a layer of slush to build up at the end of the runway. When the aircraft hit the slush, it lost velocity, making take-off impossible.

The aircraft plowed through a fence past the end of the runway, before the port wing hit a nearby house and was torn off. Fearing that the aircraft might explode, Captain Thain set about getting the surviving passengers as far away as possible. Despite this threat, Manchester United goalkeeper Harry Gregg remained behind to pull survivors from the wreckage.

At the time of the disaster, Manchester United was trying to become only the third club to win three successive English league titles; they were six points behind the League leaders the Wolverhampton Wanderers with 14 games to go. They were also holders of the Charity Shield and had just advanced into their second successive European Cup semi-final. The team was also on an 11-match unbeaten streak, and had booked their place in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup two weeks previously.

February 10 - Madrid (INN)

Our sources today have revealed that a Franco-Spanish corps launched a major offensive that successfully dismantled the Moroccan-backed Saharan Liberation Army. For the first time in the conflict superior European air power was brought to bear as France and Spain deployed a joint air fleet of 150 aircraft. The Spanish ground forces attached to the Franco-Spanish corps is rumored to number around 9,000 strong while the French number around 5,000 troops.

The first to fall the the allies were the Moroccan mountain strongholds at Tan-Tan. Bombed from above and rocketed from below, the Saharan Liberation Army suffered 150 dead and abandoned its war caches.

The 4th, 9th, and 13th Spanish Legion battalions, organized into a motorized Brigade, were reported to have driven the Moroccans from Edchera and swept through to Tafurdat and Smara.

While the Spanish army at El Aaiún, in conjunction with French forces from Fort Gouraud, were reported to have struck the Moroccans on February 21st, destroying the Saharan Liberation Army's concentrations between Bir Nazaran and Ausert.

Today the worst school bus accident in U.S. history has occured at Prestonburg, Kentucky where 26 children and their bus driver are killed.

On a cold and cloudy morning, after a period of heavy rains and thaw, a Floyd County school bus loaded with 48 elementary and high school students bound for school at Prestonsburg on U.S. Route 23 struck the rear of a wrecker and plunged down an embankment and into the swollen waters of the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River, where it was swept downstream and submerged.

22 children managed to escape the bus in the first few minutes before it became fully submerged in the raging flood stage waters and made it safely out of the river. However, 26 other children and the bus driver drowned. National Guard and other agencies have responded to the horrible tragedy. The bus was finally located by Navy divers, and removed from the river 53 hours later.

A Commonwealth team of explorers, led by Dr. Vivian Fuchs, has completed the first crossing of the Antarctic in Sno-Cat caterpillar tractors and dogsled teams in 99 days.

The Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition -CTAE- is a Commonwealth-sponsored expedition that has successfully completed the first overland crossing of Antarctica, via the South Pole. It is the first expedition to reach the South Pole overland, preceded only by Amundsen's and Scott's respective parties in 1911 and 1912.

In keeping with the tradition of polar expeditions of the 'heroic age' the CTAE is a private venture, although it was supported by the governments of the United Kingdom, New Zealand, United States, Australia, and South Africa, as well as many corporate and individual donations, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II.

It is headed by British explorer Dr. Vivian Fuchs, with New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary leading the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team. The New Zealand party included scientists participating in the International Geophysical Year -IGY- research while the UK IGY team was separately based at Halley Bay

March 8 – Washington (INN)

March 11 – Washington (INN)

Today Mars Bluff, an unincorporated community in Florence County, South Carolina, bears the distinction of having been inadvertently bombed with a nuclear weapon by the United States Air Force.

As reported by the Secretary of Defense, a U.S. Air Force B-47 Stratojet from the Hunter Air Force Base's 308th Bombardment Wing in Savannah, Georgia took off around 4:34 p.m. It was scheduled to fly to the United Kingdom for Operation Snow Flurry. The plane was required to carry nuclear weapons in the event of war breaking out with the Soviet Union.

Air Force Captain Bruce Kulka, the navigator, was summoned to the bomb bay area after the Captain of the plane had encountered a fault light in the cockpit, indicating that the bomb harness locking pin for the transatlantic flight did not engage. As Captain Kulka was reaching around the bomb to pull himself up, he mistakenly grabbed the emergency release pin. The Mark 6 atomic bomb dropped to the floor of the B-47 and the weight forced the bomb bay doors open, sending the bomb 15,000 feet down to the ground below.

Although the bomb did not contain the removable core of fissionable uranium and plutonium, the core was securely stored in a containment area onboard the plane and thus not technically a traditional "atomic" bomb per se., although it did contain 7,600 pounds of conventional explosives. The resulting explosion created a mushroom cloud and crater estimated to be 75 feet wide and 25–35 feet deep.

It destroyed a local home, the residence of Walter Gregg, and leveled nearby trees. Nobody was directly killed from the blast but several people in Gregg's family were injured from the explosion.

March 17 – London (INN)

Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, the IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations with 170 Member States and three Associate Members. The IMO's primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping, and its remit today includes safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security, and the efficiency of shipping.

The IMO is governed by an Assembly of members and is financially administered by a Council of members elected from the Assembly. The work of the IMO is conducted through five committees and these are supported by technical subcommittees. Member organizations of the UN organizational family may observe the proceedings of the IMO. Observer status is granted to qualified non-governmental organizations.

The IMO is supported by a permanent secretariat of employees who are representative of its members. The secretariat is composed of a Secretary-General who is periodically elected by the Assembly, and various divisions such as those for marine safety, environmental protection, and a conference section.

Today Nikita Khrushchev becomes Premier of the Soviet Union.

Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, born on April 15 1894, has been approved as the Premier of the Soviet Union today. He will serve as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and will be the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, or Premier.

Nikita Khrushchev was born in the Russian village of Kalinovka in 1894. He was employed as a metalworker in his youth, and during the Russian Civil War was a political commissar. With the help of Lazar Kaganovich, he worked his way up the Soviet hierarchy. He supported Joseph Stalin's purges, and approved thousands of arrests.

In 1939, Stalin sent him to govern the Ukraine, where he continued the purges there. During what was known in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War -Eastern Front of World War II, Khrushchev was again a commissar, serving as an intermediary between Stalin and his generals. Khrushchev was present at the bloody defense of Stalingrad, a fact he took great pride in throughout his life. After the war he returned to the Ukraine before being recalled to Moscow as one of Stalin's closest advisers.

In the power struggle triggered by Stalin's death in 1953, Khrushchev, after several years, emerged victorious. On February 25th, 1956, at the 20th Party Congress, he delivered the "Secret Speech," denouncing Stalin's purges and ushering in a less repressive era in the Soviet Union.

Today United Airlines Flight 736 was involved in a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force F-100F-5-NA Super Sabre jet fighter near Las Vegas, Nevada. All 49 persons in both aircraft are killed.

United Airlines Flight 736 was a daily U.S. transcontinental passenger flight operated by United Airlines that crashed, following a mid-air collision. The aircraft assigned to Flight 736, a Douglas DC-7 airliner was carrying 47 passengers and was flying at cruise altitude above Clark County, Nevada, en route to a stopover at Denver, Colorado, when it was struck by a United States Air Force fighter jet crewed by two pilots. The collision occurred at 8:30 a.m. in clear weather within a major commercial airway; both aircraft fell out of control from 21,000 feet and crashed into the unpopulated desert terrain southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada.

There were no survivors from either aircraft, and with 49 fatalities it is the deadliest crash in the history of the Las Vegas Valley. Amongst the victims were a group of military personnel and civilian contractors involved with sensitive Department of Defense weapons systems. The loss of the group has triggered in the Pentagon new rules prohibiting similar groups engaged in critical projects from flying aboard the same aircraft.

The investigatators have stated they suspect that cockpit visibility limitations played a role in the accident, but also faulted military and civilian aviation authorities for not taking measures to reduce well-known collision risks that had existed for over a year within the confines of airways, despite numerous complaints from airline crews.

The loss of United Airlines Flight 736, as a part of a series of mid-air collisions, including the well-publicized 1956 Grand Canyon mid-air collision, has caused Congress to begin deliberations in coming up with new legislation for widespread improvements in air traffic control within the United States.

CNSA Launches Again!
Quote:
This month, the CNSA has had two further successful animal sub-orbital flights. The Director says, "From the data collected, we have been able to push the efficiency of the capsule well beyond that that research alone would have allowed us to. Many of our elite scientists are holding meetings to determine if space will incur no measurable risk to our cosmonauts health, and they will reach their decision on whether or not it is safe for human flights in a few weeks, though setting up the facility and training procedures will still take some time. Also scheduled for launch is many more satellites, to expand our communications network.
