I hope Flamand does not mind me showing some test renders of some of the new ships in the mod before he makes them. This is to get the ball rolling with content on these forums. :bs

Moskva Class

MOSKVA CLASS

In most respects, the MOSKVA class continued design and engineering trends established in the HERCULES and DAEDALUS classes introduced before and during the Romulan War. As in these classes, ship functions were clearly divided between a command/crew hull and an engineering/propulsion hull. The bridge was returned to its customary position atop the command hull and the shuttlecraft bay was again placed in the secondary hull. The fusion tokamak was centered along the longitudinal axis of the ship, and impulse thrust ports exited immediately in front of the warp bustle detachment seam. Weaponry was the then-standard mix of fusion-warhead missiles and lasers. New to this class was an early type of ultraphased pulse laser cannon, two of which were mounted in the chin of the primary hull. Although the on-target energy output of this new weapon approached that of early phasers, its power requirement was higher and its range was substantially less. However, subsequent refinements lead to steady improvement and, ultimately, to the development of true phasers in 2202. Although MOSKVA-class ships were the first to be fitted with phasers in 2204, lasers were still carried by the MOSKVA class and later classes until the 2220s. Finally, warp capability was supplied by the long-awaited "Hiryu" mark III drive units.

The first ship of the new class, USS MOSKVA (NCC-374), entered service with Starfleet in April 2179. An additional 30 ships (NCC-375 to NCC-404) joined the fleet through 2183. MOSKVA-class ships gained immediate popularity with officers and crews. First, total laser firepower was increased some 75% over that in the preceding WASP class. Second, because the ship's mass was more equally distributed along the longitudinal axis than in the WASP class, MOSKVA was significantly more maneuverable at both sublight and warp speeds. Finally, the more warp-dynamic design allowed greater cruising and maximum speeds.

Although most ships of the MOSKVA class had left front-line service by 2215, some continued to serve as auxiliaries and training vessels until the 2240s. After retirement from active duty, MOSKVA-class ships were used as testbeds for many emerging technologies owing to the similarities of their layouts to those of succeeding classes. USS MOSKVA was the site of the first successful ship-to-surface transport of a human being in 2206, and USS GATO was the first ship to fire photon torpedoes in 2214. In addition, TAURUS-class tugs, which entered service in 2182, and SANFORD-class repair tenders, which entered service in 2185, were derived from the MOSKVA class and used the same primary hull and warp drive assembly.

This is the UESN's Amarillo Class frigate.

Five AMARILLO-class ships had entered service by 2152; although a basically sound design, it was hampered by the limited speed and range of all fusion-powered ships. The AMARILLO had a spherical hull some 58 m in diameter which housed most crew facilities, command centers, computer cores, life-support machinery, and weaponry. The secondary hull of the AMARILLO housed the 3N-9D fusion reactor, which powered both the impulse drive and the twin outboard Jaguar I warp nacelles.

As expected, AMARILLO's performance at impulse was rather poor but was not considered a serious operational handicap since extensive combat at sublight speeds was not anticipated. AMARILLO had a top speed of warp 2.5 (15.6 c), and could maintain this speed for 200 hours.

UESN Powhatan Class Escort Cruiser

Image

The POWHATAN-class cruisers (CEM-15) were originally designed to serve as escorts for YORKTOWN-class carriers on their strike missions in Romulan territory. Since these YORKTOWN carriers carried only short-range area defense missiles, they were considered vulnerable to attack by smaller, more maneuverable warp-capable cruisers. A YORKTOWN carrier's only sure means of defense was to use its superior speed to outrun attacking ships, but such a strategy might prevent them from arriving at the rendezvous point and recovering their MINOTAUR fighters. If however, the carrier were accompanied by one or more smaller, heavily armed ships, all phases of the mission -- penetration, launch, rendezvous, recovery, and return -- could be performed with a much lower risk of interference by enemy ships. Although a series of KRECHET cruisers on station along the mission route might be used to protect the carrier by turns, such a strategy would clearly increase the cost and complexity of the mission as well as the risk of detection. The alternative of launching MINOTAUR cruisers to fend off attackers would require the ship to drop out of warp and was not seriously considered.

Even before the launch of UES KRECHET (CCM-1) with the first production shipboard M/AM reactor (SSWR-IIB), engineers at Argyre Planitia had been hard at work developing a series of compact but more powerful reactors for use in even smaller ships. The first reactor to enter service was the SSWR-IIC, used in the TORSK class. Although significantly smaller and lighter than the SSWR-IIB, it was also slightly less powerful. This slight performance deficit was considered acceptable for border patrol ships, which were expected to operate in a limited geographic area. However, escorts for carriers had to be capable of sustained operations at high speeds for month-long missions into enemy territory.

The SSWR-IID reactor, introduced in January 2158, was perhaps the major reason for the success of the POWHATAN class. Because this new reactor was approximately 30% smaller and lighter but could provide higher peak output levels for longer periods of time, POWHATAN could be considerably smaller than earlier cruisers but have significantly improved performance. POWHATAN's sleek lines were also strikingly different from those of earlier cruisers: Where KRECHET had been fat and round, POWHATAN was long and thin. Her primary hull was 2.5 times longer than it was wide and her reactor hull was only 17 meters in diameter. Although POWHATAN had a single midline Superrhino I warp nacelle to decrease weight, considerable maneuverability was achieved without the drag effects of outboard nacelles by means of three Minimax IV directional warp nacelles attached directly to the primary hull in a 120-degree configuration. To further reduce weight fixed cheek-mounted cannons were used instead of a laser turret.

POWHATAN ships were extremely effective in their role of long-range escorts for YORKTOWN carriers. In fact, no YORKTOWN carriers under their protection were lost to enemy fighters or cruisers in the last 15 months of the war. The long range, high speeds, and heavy weaponry of the POWHATAN class also made these ships useful in a wide range of other roles. By the start of 2159, POWHATANs had largely superseded all other small cruisers, including those of the AMARILLO, KRECHET, and TORSK classes, in most traditional roles of escorts, destroyers, scouts, and cruisers. Several ships were equipped with special extendable high-gain sensor arrays so that they could perform intelligence missions deep within enemy territory. Even after the introduction of the COMET class in October 2158, the superior firepower of the POWHATAN cruisers ensured that they would continue to serve as front-line cruisers until the end of the war. However, when peace came in 2160, a lack of space for scientific facilities and an absence of a credible threat on Federation borders meant that POWHATAN cruisers had only limited roles in the new Starfleet. POWHATAN cruisers were finally retired in 2185, after the introduction of the far more versatile MOSKVA-class cruisers.

UESN Farragut Class Bombardment Ship.

Image

After the introduction of the SSWR-IIIB reactor and the improved SSWR-IIIC reactors in 2158 and 2159, several additional ship classes based on the BISON hull entered service. The FARRAGUT-class fleet bombardment ship (FMM-1) had been designed to provide fire support for contested planetary landings. The ventral forehull was modified to carry six vertical launch tubes for Grand Slam orbit-to-ground attack missiles.

Below the first section of the secondary hull was an Ultra Zeus orbit-ground pulse laser mounted in a ball turret. Although five FARRAGUT-class ships had been built by the end of hostilities, the projected landings upon Romulan-held planets never took place and none of the ships saw action in their intended role. However, the nine FARRAGUT-class ships were transferred to Starfleet after 2161 and with refits and upgrades continued in service until 2215.

UESN Yorktown Class Carrier

Image

In June 2158, the M/AM/fusion-powered MINOTAUR fighter (P/A-33) and the M/AM-powered YORKTOWN carrier (CVM-5) were introduced in an attempt to overcome the operational limitations of early M/AM ships by combining the speed and range M/AM-powered warp flight with the maneuverability of high-impulse fighters. YORKTOWN was based on the PIONEER-class cruiser, which had entered service in 2154 and had itself been developed from the BISON-class transport. Whereas PIONEER had a large fusion reactor, a single midline Pachyderm III warp nacelle, and two auxiliary directional Jaguar I nacelles, YORKTOWN carried a new SSWR-IIIB M/AM reactor and four paired Jaguar III warp nacelles. The impulse drive and its fusion reactor were moved to the extreme stern. At the front of YORKTOWN''s cylindrical forehull, which had been lengthened by some 20 m, were sensors and the navigational deflector, command centers, the computer core, crew facilities, and life-support machinery. In the center section of the forehull were docking cradles for 5 MINOTAUR long-range fighters. In the aft section of the forehull were auxiliary deuterium tanks, the missile room, and support facilities for the MINOTAUR fighters. With a displacement of some 670,00 tons, YORKTOWN was by far the largest Earth-designed warship produced to that time and would not be surpassed until the AMBASSADOR class was launched in the 2330s.

The MINOTAUR/YORKTOWN system proved extremely effective in both its long-range strike and antiship roles. Both ships were at least twice as fast as the fastest Romulan cruisers and fighters and were also able to evade or outrun most enemy missiles until late in the war. In ship-to-ship combat at warp speeds, a flight of five MINOTAURs could easily run down any Romulan warship or cargo vessel and overwhelm its defenses. At sublight speeds, MINOTAUR's relatively low weight allowed it to hold its own against Romulan warp-capable fighters or even sublight fighters. Moreover, because of its superior speed, MINOTAUR could disengage and escape at will if it found itself in danger.

From 2158 to 2161, 46 YORKTOWN carriers and 415 MINOTAURs fighters were produced at the San Francisco, Utopia Planitia, and Proxima Centauri fleet yards. Most MINOTAURs were of the original Mark I type, but 59 were of the Mark II type, whose command hull was lengthened 6 m to accept the improved Python warp missile. Although MINOTAURs were usually operated from YORKTOWN carriers, they were also launched from starbases or space stations in the last year of the war. A small number of MINOTAUR fighters were also used on a trial basis by the Andorian Great Blue Fleet, which generally operated ships only of Andorian design. By mid-2159, however, the MINOTAUR/YORKTOWN system was beginning to be superseded in its long-range strike and anti-ship roles by COMET-class ships, whose smaller but more powerful SSWR-IVA M/AM reactor and twin warp nacelles allowed greater maneuverability, speed, and range at warp. That MINOTAUR was not completely replaced by COMET is a reflection of its much better performance at sublight speeds and teething problems with COMET's new M/AM reactor.

In addition to numerous strikes against ground-based targets and antishipping raids, MINOTAUR and YORKTOWN ships participated in most major engagements of the last 2 years of the war, including the Battle of the Krakowski Void and the Battle of Cheron. In several campaigns, notably Yadalla and Kaph-42, MINOTAURs were used to provide low-orbit fire support during Marine Corps landings. A total of 7 YORKTOWN carriers and 41 MINOTAUR fighters were lost in combat from 2158 through 2160. After the war, most Mark I MINOTAURs were retired from service, but many Mark II's were fitted with SSWR-VA warp reactors and twin nacelles and continued service as long-range strike fighters into the 2180s. In addition, many retired MINOTAURs were purchased by private citizens and, nearly 200 years after their withdrawal from service, have had a long second career as sport racers. After the war, many YORKTOWN carriers were converted to fast transports and tankers.

Going by the other unit shots all the ships are rendered flying towards us, so isn't the Breen cruiser pointing the wrong way?

I know it looks funny, but if you look closely you can see the bridge in the central pod/hull. But don't quote me on that. :w

Anybody have a screenie from the TV show of a Breen flying?

Judging from this I think the orientation is correct...

I would of said the opposite, but in that shot it is very hard to tell direction. From what I remember from the show, the sections curved inwards to the prow.

Going by this and this I still think the model is the wrong way round.

You may be right... So we'll have to be careful with the Breen so they won't be flying backwards... :)

Req, My friend I do believe you are correct. :AH

I never got to see any of the episodes with the Breen in them, so thanks for the clarification.

Here is the Fed TOS Local Patrol Ship, The Thunderbolt Class. :AH
This ship would be akin to the US WW2 PT Boat, also deployable with it's flotilla tender capable of carrying 6 into the combat areas.
