The sacred scroll is ceremoniously burned on the Temple Mount. At the former Temple sanctuary, he installs two statues, one of Jupiter, another of himself. To wipe the memory of the Jews from history he replaces the name of the provice Iudea with Syria Palaestina, after the Philistines, the ancient enemies of the Jews. He reestablishes Hierosolyma as the Roman pagan polis of Aelia Capitolina, and Jews were forbidden from entering it.

887 135, Arrianus repels an Alan invasion by successfully organizing the legions and auxiliary troops at his disposal. He deployed the legionaries in depth supported by polyboros ballistae, veiltes armed with pila in ambush, and Cavalry on the flanks defeated the assault of the Alan cataphracts using these combined arms tactics. The battle was a victory of a Roman infantry heavy force against armored barbarian cavalry and it stood as proof that they could defeat barbarian cavalry heavy armies if proper tactics are used.

888 136 Seeing how devastated the Alan army was, Arrianus decided to put pay to the Alan account by following up the Alan attack by launching an assault of his own. In a campaign that would have been worthy of the divine Caesar, Arrianus sweeps the Caucaso (Caucasus) clear of the Alans and uses the Tanais (Don) and the Rha (Volga) as stopping points. He then fortifies the open section of the steppe between the narrow portion not covered by the rivers.

890 138 The Senate organizes the Praefecturus Caucaso with the provincae Colchis; Populi Colchis, Iberia; Municipum Iberia Superior, Albania; Montana Albania Inferior, and Alania; Isca Silurum**.

1002 250 First appearence of Roman Fulminata using Pila. They are little more than bronze tubes strapped to a wooden stock. Their range is limited to fifty yards and at first they are mainly used for their shock value before closing to melee range with the Gladius.

1003 251 The Goths under Cniva began the invasion of the Roman Empire when he crossed the Dniester. He sent detachments throughout the Roman province of Gothica II with forces of Goths, Germans, and Sarmatians. His considerable forces demanded the attention of the provincial Pro-Consul Decimus Publicus Paratus. While Cniva was laying siege to the city of Tyras, Publicus arrived, and the Goths left and headed towards Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the Prefecture's capital. Publicus and his troops, now reinforced by the troops of the Prefecture, pursued Cniva through the difficult terrain, but after many a forced march, Cniva turned his his troops on Publicus, who had assumed he was further away from the Goths than he actually was. The Roman castra was surprised and Publicus fled while his army was defeated. Cniva then laid siege to Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, and after a long resistance he conquered the city, slaying one hundred thousand people, and taking just as many prisoner.

1004 252 The Empire's Response

The sack of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa invigorated the Emperor, who began to form another army to intercept any troops consisting of Germans, Sarmatians and Goths.

The new Pro-Consul, Titus Atticus Iulian, repaired and strengthened his fortifications along the Dniester, intending to oppose Cniva’s forces. The Romans in time, with their superior numbers, surrounded the Goths, who attempted now to retreat from the empire with their booty and prisoners. But Atticus, seeking revenge and confident of victory, attacked the Goths at a small town called Forum Longinus. The Gothic army was caught in a swamp and when they attempted to attack the Roman army, the Tormentum opened fire. The Legionaires fired one volley, dropped their Pilas, and drew their Gladuis's. Like the Divine Caesar had done centurys ago, they began the slaughter up close and personal. Every member of that invading army, including Cniva, were slain in this battle. The battle was known as the Battle of Forum Longinus.

1012 260 Under Marcus Iulius Cinna and after the conquest of Aethopia there were increasing demands from the Roman economy to extend the trade lanes to India. The Arabian control of all sea routes to India was an obstacle. One of the first naval operations under princeps Cinna was therefore the preparation for a campaign on the Arabian peninsula. Aelius Gallus the Pro-Consul for Aethopia was ordered to construct 130 transports and subsequently carried the army of Decimus Quintilius Scipio to Arabia.

1013 262 Decimus Scipio secures the province of Sabae, our Yemen, and the Mecca - Medina area. The province is attached to Arabia Patrea, Nabatea Superior, and Madiane and forms the provincae Arabia.

1014 265 Scipio finalizes the conquest and absorbtion of the Arabian Penninsula with the conquest of Macae, our Oman and U.A.E. Roman trade with India begins to flourish afterward.

1019 270 Army Reformation under Scipio. Between the reigns of Augustus and Trajan the Roman Army perhaps reached its pinnacle of non-fulminata armed warfare. It is the army of this time which is generally understood as the 'classical' Roman army. However, contrary to popular belief, this was not the army which eventually defeated the barbarian assaults of the thrid and fourth centuries.

The Roman army evolved, changing in time, adapting to new challenges. For a long time it didn't need to change much as it held supremacy on the battlefield. And so until AD 250 it was still the gladius armed infantry which dominated the Roman army.

But the day of gladius as the main combat weapon was eventually to become a thing of the past. The main reason for such changes to come about were the demands of barbarian raiding of the frontiers was placing on the army.

Lucius Flavius Arrianus was the first to suggest the revival of the Greek Sarissa as a second line to support the fulminata armed legionarii due to the barbarian reliance on cavalry forces. He reasoned that the Sarissa would hold off the assaulting cavalry allowing the fulminata armed troops to pour withering fire into the milling, disorganized cavalry. His idea was turned down as too radical.

However, Cniva's Gothic assault on the Empire shook the army out of its complacency and forced them to look for new ideas to combat the barbarians. The introduction of the Roman Matchlock Arquebus and the conquest of Arabia cemented in Scipio's mind that Arrianus was on to something.

Scipio reorganized the legion on the following pattern:

1 Turmae - 80 Men
10 Turmae - Legio Cavalry Detachment - 800 Men

1 Contubernium - 8 men
10 Contubernium's - 1 Century - 80 men
5 Centuries - 1 Maniple - 400 Men
2 Maniples - 1 Cohort - 800 Men
10 Cohorts + 10 Turmae of Cavalry = 1 Legio - 8,800 Men

Each legio usually had one Auxilia of Tormentum attached, but was not organic to the Legio.

Each Century had 7 Contubernium's arranged into three lines of Pilum gunners. The three lines allowed the front rank to fire while the other two reloaded. This allowed the Century to maintain a constant rate of fire, even under combat conditions. These troops became know as the Principes. The other three Contubernium's were equipped with the eighteen foot Macedonian Sarissa and a hastula for close in defense. These three Contubernium's were arranged into two lines, but were offset by one to allow the rear rank to about face if it seemed the Century was about to be hit from the rear. These troops were designated Triarii in tribute to the pike carriers of the old Republican legios.

With the reorganization a new formation was created for defensive purposes. This formation was an extension of the old testudo formation that had the two flank centuries turn to their respective facing, the center two Centuries about face and one advancing to the rear several paces and the other Century taking up the reserve position. Then the Centuries closed ranks with their respective Centuries. Thus each Maniple could form two of these square-like formations that were known as the Tericus Quincux, since when the Legion entered this formation the checkerboard pattern became even more pronounced.

It was with this new organization and tactics that the Romans held off the renewed Gothic assault, along with stopping a new threat, the Huns in their tracks. The barbarian armies found that they could not close with the Roman Pilum gunners due to the Triarii while the Pilum gunners continued to pour devastating fire into their ranks. It was also this type of army that eventually added India to the Empire.

1025 276 First Han designed pilum makes its appearence on the battlefield against the Wei.

1028 279 The reorganization of the Roman Army is completed.

1382 628 AD A group from the nomad clan called Muslim, in the province of Arabia, consisting of 1,400 Men marched towards Meccae, the provincal capital, in an attempt to perform their pilgrimage rite. The group was prepared with animals of sacrifice, as they hoped that the Roman governor would honor the Arabian custom of allowing unarmed pilgrims to enter the city. The Roman garrison however, intercepted the Muslim party well outside Meccae.

Muhammad, the leader of the Muslims, wanted to avoid bloodshed and was reported to have said the following: "We have not come to fight anyone, but to perform the 'Umra. So you must refrain from interfering between me and the people, and if I have victory over those infidels, Rum (Rome) will have the option to embrace Islam as the other people do, if they wish. But if they do not accept the truce, by Allah in Whose Hands my life is, I will fight with them defending my cause till I get killed, but (I am sure) Allah will make His cause victorious."

The governor knew that if he allowed the Muslims to proceed into the provincial capital fighting would break out between the two tribes, the Muslims and the Quraysh. This he could not allow since the Quraysh have been loyal subjects of the Empire for centuries, and Roma always protects her subjects.

The governor had the tormentum open fire on the troublemaking tribe of Muslims. Between the tormenta fire, the Legionarii Pilum and the Eques hastula fire, the leader, Muhammad, and his second in command, a man named Abu Bakr, along with 400 of their number were slain. The chief of the Quraysh had previously informed the governor that Muhammad had once been a member of their tribe, but was exiled due to his religious blatherings about being a messenger of the one true god. Nothing more was ever heard from the renegade tribe of nomads.

The governor just chalked it up to another round of religious zealotry this part of the Empire was known for, they come and they go, as long as peace was maintained Rome would allow such to exist. But if fighting threatened to break out it would be stamped out with extreme prejudice. Islam joined Christianity as just another sect of Iudean religion.

1452 700 Unbeknownst to the Romans a new player begins to explore and colonize outside their own realm, the Northmen or Norse.

1545 793 For the first time in centuries an outside force began to raid Roman territory. A Norse raiding party landed on the east coast of Caledonia and sacked the Roman town of Devana (Aberdeen). The commander of the Classis Britannia dispatched a squadron of 6 sail equipped triremes to catch the raiders. The entire squadron was destroyed by the superior ships of the Norse squadron. The Roman Governor of Britannia shrugged it off as just another pirate raid.

1587 833 For the last 40 years there had been peace. The Norse had been preparing for a full-scale invasion and from 833 onwards, hardly a year went by without a raid being reported to the Governor in Londinium. The Romans still believed that the raids were random acts of piracy and therefore relegated the threat to minimal.

1605 851 The Norse, under Ragnar Hairy-Breeches, for the first time wintered in Caledonia. When the commander of the XX Legio Vicesimae Valeria Victrix (Valiant & Victorius), stationed at the Castra Pinna near Tuessis (Inchtuthill) Caledonia, attempted to catch the Norse in their winter camps, but they were in turn ambushed and destroyed by Ragnar and his Northmen. The Romans had learned the hard way that the cold is no threat to the Norse.

1610 856 By 856 the Norse had control of Caledonia and were within sight of Eburacum when the Governor of Britannia offered lands down to Hadrian's wall and a yearly payment of 1000 talents of gold and 2000 talents of silver a year for 10 years for peace. This was more than Ragnar had expected, so of course accepted. For the first time in Centuries the legions of Rome had been defeated and could not protect their lands.

The reason for this was simple. Naval Power and the Roman inability to project it. Since the Romans had not had a foe for centuries who could defeat them on the water, they still relied on the sail equipped galleys that are fit for the Med and its calmer waters. On the Oceanus Germanicus (North Sea) and the Oceanus Atlanticus (Atlantic) their galleys were prone to sinking in those rougher seas.

The Norse on the other hand had their longships. Ships that were designed with the oceans in mind. That and the Norse were natural sailors since it was far easier to travel in their lands by sea. Combine these two items with the fact that the Roman armies were stretched to the breaking point and had nothing to send to Britannia, not that they could get past the Norse Longships, forced Rome to come to terms with the new power in the north. They had yet to defeat or capture a Norse Longship, so the Romans looked forward to the next round, hoping to do much better.

1621 867 In 867, three famous sons of Ragnar Hairy-Breeches: Ivar the the Boneless, Guthrum and Halfdan landed on the East coast, marched across country, seized Eburacum and settled in the tribal lands of the Brigantes.

1625 871 By 871 the Norse had overrun the north of Britannia and were preparing to attack the Roman stronghold of Londinium. This was the first time they had come face-to-face with the Roman Pro-Consul Arrius. Although only second in command, to the Governor, Arrius led the Romans to victory.

In 871 Arrius, after the death of the Governor in battle, was given the governorship by the Emperor in Roma. Within months he was on the battlefields once again. This time however, he was defeated at Verulamium (St Alban's) and was forced to pay a tribute. After this the Norse split in two. One group under the leadership of Halfdan went and settled in the lands of the Coritani making Lindum (Lincoln) their capital. The remaining under Guthrum settled in the lands of the Iceni and made Camboricum (Cambridge) their capital and waited for another chance to attack Londinium and South England.

1629 875 In 875, Arrius went to sea with a small naval force and on the south coast of Britannia near Dubrae (Dover) met 7 Norse longships and defeated them, he even managed to board and capture one of them. This was the first time that the Norse had been effectively challenged at sea so Arrius decided to build a fleet based on the captured Longship.

While busy over-seeing the shipbuilding project, Arrius failed to notice that Guthrum had marched south. Guthrum had taken Calleva (Silchester) thus surrounding Londinium and Sussex and giving the Norse a much greater chance of success. The Norse had taken control of most of the British Isles and the native tribes submitted to them. But not Arrius and his Romanized British that were concentrated in Sussex and Londinium. He and his troops made their main stronghold at Londinium, which gave them the ability to shift troops where they were needed faster than the seperate Norse forces could.

Arrius, wishing to know what the Norse plans were, dressed as a wandering minstrel and walked boldly into the Norse camp and snuck his way into the council of war. After staying a few days, and content that he knew all he needed to, Arrius hurried back and told his men how easily the Norse could be beaten.

With the people of Sussex and Kent united behind Arrius, the Legios and Auxila were overflowing with volunteers. Arrius drove the Norse back to Ratae (Leichester) and stayed to negotiate a treaty with Guthrum. This treaty stated that Arrius and the Roman people aknowledged their new neighbors and territories. Guthrum returned to the Norse territores which was comprised of the provinces of Northumberland, Cumbria, Durham, North Yorkshire, Lancashire, West Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Manchester and Merseyside, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Empire, still not able to reinforce Britannia, advised Arrius to accept the presence of the Northmen to buy time and allow the Classis's in the north to be re-equipped with copies of the Viking Longships.

1636 882 After Guthrum moved back to Norseland, there had been seven years of peace. this was until a new army from Norway came across the Oceanus Germanicus and seized the city of Camulodunum (Colchester). Arrius's reinforced army came once again to the rescue, although, and defeated the new invaders and pushed them back to sea.

1640 886 Arrius began to steadily push the Norse back with many small coastal invasions to outflank their armies and by 886 had regained control of Lindum. By now all the Romans looked upon Arrius as a gift from Mars. Arrius felt an easing of pressure and then concentrated on his defenses. He began fortifing towns and villages then added a small Auxila garrison to each.

1647 893 There had been seven more years of peace, until The Great Army from Norway crossed the North Sea with 250 ships, sailed up the Great Ourse River and stormed one of Arrius's fortified towns, Camboricum once again was sacked by the Norse. These Norse were defeated at Verulamium (Braughing).

1649 895 At the same time the Norse in Cimbria (Denmark) chose to send 100 ships to the north coast of Kent at Regulbio (Reculver), so that the Romans would have to march southeast. The Romans overtook the Norse army on the banks of the Thamesis (Thames) and then flanked and besieged it on every side. The Norse this time were defeated by famine. When they finally decided to fight, rather than starve, they marched out to face the Romans. When they did they died to a man, never surrendering. After 2 further years of fighting, the Norse great invasion was defeated.

1654 900 By 900 the British Isles were cleared of the Norse and the Romans began to go on the offensive to track down where these fearsome invaders had come from. They began the push to clear Cimbria of Norse and by years end had cleared the islands between Cimbria and Scandia. Next was to push up into Scandia and conquer these warriors who had fought so valiantly against the might of Rome.

For the first time in centuries a Roman Consul was given a full Triumph through the streets of Roma. Arrius was brought back to Roma and the populace fell in love with this British Consul.

1655 901 By 901 the Norse were being steadily pushed back on land. The Romans never matched the Norse for ability on the seas, so a naval invasion of Scandia never appeared. Yet it never had to. The Romans had a direct land route, albeit a very harsh one, to the heart of the land of the Norse. In their desperation the Norse begin exploring further and further west. The small Norse settlement on Iceland begins to grow as refugees from the Roman advace seek an escape. By years end the population on Iceland reaches 5000.

1659 905 The Romans are closing in on Norway having cleared the lower portion of Scandia of Norse. The Norse exodus from Norway turns into a stampede. Norse colonists begin traveling to an even more remote outpost to escape the ever advancing Romans, Greenland. By the years end Iceland's population reaches 45,000 and Greenland's reaches 4000.

1662 908 By 908 only northern Norway is free from the Romans and that is mainly due more to the climate and terrain than any armies left to the Norse. The Norse begin to lift as many people as they can to a new colony founded southwest of Greenland, called Vinland.

The fertility and mild climate of this coast, when compared with that of Labrador and Greenland, induced the Norse to settle and to found the first European colony on the American continent. The population of Vinland by years end was 1000.

1663 909 Moving down the coast the Norse find a perfect site for a wood gathering colony for Vinland, they name it Markland. By years end the various Norse colonies are as follows: Iceland 75,000, Greenland 30,000, Vinland 6000, Markland 1000.

1664 910 The Romans sense something is up when they begin to notice the sudden depopulation of the countryside and begin to push and finally conquer Scandia. What they find is an almost empty countryside. When they 'question' the few remaining people, they are told the rest had fled to the land of the setting sun. By years end the various Norse colonies are as follows: Iceland 113,000, Greenland 32,000, Vinland 48,000, Markland 23,000. No more escapees will be coming from Scandia. The Norse who have escaped know the Romans will never give up till they have tracked them down. Iceland becomes a fortress state.

1665 911 The Romans incorporate Scandia as a new province including The British Isles and Cimbria with the capital in Londinium. In all Arrius ruled England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the Orkney and Shetland islands. While he reigned the Scandian and Roman people lived in harmony.

1676 922 Arrius, the Savior of Britannia and Roman honor who defended the British Isles alone and unaided, dies of old age. He is lauded in Roma as a true Roman and given a place of honor in their pantheon of great leaders.

By this time the Norse population of Iceland has begun to fall with most of the people escaping to either Vinland or Markland. by years end the populations of the various Norse colonies are as follows: Iceland 66,000, Greenland 23,000, Vinland 73,000, Markland 34,000.

Added Lucius Flavius Arrianius's conquest of the Alans in the 130's AD.

Also added the Roman opportunistic diplomatic maneuvering that changes forever the history of China and at the same time safeguarding their northern flank. Check it out, between 248 and 252 AD.
