ROMAN MARINES; THE ROMAN ELITE

By Richard Salazar
NEW SEATTLE TIMES SENTINAL

NEW SEATTLE - Doing things the hardest
way possible Jeffrey Kincaid of the Sentinal
writes of his time as an embedded reporter
with the Roman Manipularii, 1st Century 3rd
Cohort 1st Manipularii Legio. He says he understands
the Roman Marines better now, “But I am
not sure I can explain them. They tend
to do things the hardest way possible.”
Furthermore,“They are loud and rough and
are totally ruthless. They will ignore you or
torment you if they think you are a fake.
Conversely they will do anything for you if they
like you. They will believe the wildest rumors.
One told me, early in the Denevan war, that he had
heard that the Army, rather than the Marines,
would occupy cities because the Marines
“break too much stuff.” Roman Marines tend to
think and travel in a straight line. They
have a talent for complaining and swearing
that I have seldom seen surpassed. [He never
met my platoon sergeant on New Minneapolis
when I was a platoon commander -RS ].
They were ordered to, more or less, ignore
civilians until they began to take fire. If they
took fire, they were not to stop; Their orders
encouraged a don’t-mess-with-me-and-I-
won’t-mess-with-you policy. But if someone
began firing on them, they were inviting the
worst the Roman Marines could dish out. Roman
Marines return fire with a relish unknown in the American
Marines. The Roman Marines figured anyone who
messed with them had it coming.

"Gone now, dispersed by the brutal destruction of this one day, was the belief that the Darkman and his army of the dead were so superior as to be invincible. By attempting to destroy the morale of the Marines, the Darkman had restored it to full vigor. Dia De La Muerto had failed in its objectives."
