Well you hit the nail on the head my friend, we do have the manpower, but the problem is I agree with you. Or as is known in the military parlance, our tooth to tail ratio is out of whack, too much tail and not enough tooth. :as

just had a discussion about this with Zed.

What do you guys call the pouches you have all your snot in when you're out inthe field patrolling? Spare mags, water bottles, grenades, that sort of shit. Down here its Webbing, Zed calls it GRU (GRound Utility set). we had one corporal at recruits who called it his work shirt (he was an ADG).

I can't say for the other services, but in the USMC we call it our 'deuce' gear. Or the full name 782 gear. 782 is the designation on the Corps supply roster and the Infantry just shortened it to 'deuce' gear.

thats interesting. i've never really refered to anything by its number, unless its the easiest way to know it.

how is two deuce anyway?

So you are not a poker player eh? :w

Deuce = 2
Trey = 3
One-Eyed Jacks = Jack only showing one side of face
Suicide King = King with sword going through his head.

Some of the more 'colorful' names from poker.

So a 2 is a deuce to any poker player, and in the military we played a LOT of card games. :bs And since the last number in the designation is a two, it became 'deuce' gear.

Just like 'Ma Deuce' is the slang term for the M-2 .50 caliber Browning Heavy machine Gun.

Don't forget the old "Deuce-and-a-half" trucks.

i want to see if i can get a better H-Harness for my webbing. the standard issue one is crap. same stuff they gave the guys in Vietnam, only with different pouches.

Yeah the Alice pack was, in my time at least, the core of the deuce gear. And customization of your gear with personal items has been around for a LONG time. Hell one of my fav customizations was carrying a WW1 knuckleduster trench knife. Those were some wicked knives.

I bought mine in a pawn shop outside Camp Lejeune. Evidently someone else had pawned it and had forgotten it there. And this one was an honest to god WW1 Trench knife. Still has the faint US Army stamp on the brass knuckles.

Great close in fighting knife, it can kill you three ways, Blade, Brass Knuckles, or the Bolt holding the blade in place.

im going to have to find me one of those.

Yup, its as deadly as it looks. I have noticed that you can find replicas of it in some surplus mags. So if you try there, you may find one for sale. Only way I would part with mine is if someone pried it out of my dead, cold fingers. :bs

This and the Winchester 'Trench Broom' Combat shotgun were the two things the Germans feared the most about Yanks getting into their trenches and they howled mightily how these weapons were 'unethical'. Seems us Yanks never fight 'fair'. :w Always wanting to win. :ac

i wonder if its allowed by the geneva convention. serrated blades and other nasties are not. They're pretty big on the genevea over here.

also, i think that the knuckle-duster handgaurd would make it illegal over here... but where theres a will there's a way.

I tell you what, you use your 'geneva' approved toothpick, and I will use my Knuckleduster. We will see who comes out on top. :w

If I have to go into combat with some bullshit knife because of some whiny pussies in Euroland, I say fuck 'em. I will carry what will give me a greater chance for survivability. Besides, the blade is not serrated, just a double-edged six-inch blade. :bs
