a short version of it is, on te 18th of August 1966, D Company of 6RAR, based at Nui Dat, enountered 275 Regiment of the Viet Cong in the Long Tan rubber plantation. The relief force (A Company and 1 APC squadron) encountered D445 Local Forces battalion on the way. After several hours of fighting, in which they were resupplied by RAAF Iroquois (Hueys), and artillery support from Australian, NZ, and US batteries. The artillery fired 1 shell every 15 seconds for 3 hours.
By the end of it, there were 245 confirmed VC killed, and estimated over 2000 wounded. 18 Australians were killed (17 from D company and 1 from the APC squadron), and 24 wounded.
Much later, reports from the Viet Cong had their estimates of Australian strength at an entire battalion. The first elements of the battle were fought entirely by 11 platoon of D company.
