They are the Insectoid Species that the Terrans have skirmished with, and mentioned in A Test of Wills. I have also written up a background for them. If you wish to see it in this thread, let me know.

As for fodder for the Draugir, well, lets just say they nearly wiped out the entire Halaorian Species with just migration moves. In addition, they did not even realize that the Hallies were sentient, much less that they were at war with them. :as

Even the Draugir and the Numerians, if they knew about them, would stay as far away as was possible. :bs

Let's put it this way, The Elysians think the Humans can defeat the Dark Ones, but are not sure if the entire galaxy, combined, with both the Numies and Draugir fighting on the same side, can halt the Kryill-Ya, what the Ch'thpch become once Solidarius finds them. :as

Below is the Encyclopedia Galactica Entry for the Ch'Thpch Nest:

The Ch’Thpch Nest

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Hymenoptera
Family: Formicidae
Subfamily: Ecitoninae
Tribe: Ecitonini
Genus: Eciton
Species: Eciton Ch’Thanii

ORIGIN

Over 400 million years ago, several sub-species of insects became self-aware on the planet now called Ch’Than “The Old World”. Over the course of millions of years, these sub-species fought amongst themselves and directed their own evolution, developing castes of acid-squirting gunners, sharp-mandibled grain harvesters, and other specialists.

The various sub-species' ability to link minds in a form of pheromone-transmitted “psionic” communication led to a rapid escalation of racial development as each sub-species strove to gain an advantage over their rivals. By literally “putting their heads together,” the inch-long, ant-like species could achieve the intellect of creatures far larger than themselves.

DESCRIPTION

The individual Ch’Thpch is a six-legged insect one inch in length with a pair of powerful mandibles and the ability to express thoughts and emotions through a subtle array of pheromones emitted and detected by sensory organs on the antennae. When physically joined by their antennae, individual Ch’Thpch can exchange memories, experiences, and feelings with each other at the speed of thought. For all intents and purposes, they become a single mind.

When the Ch’Thpch need a solution to a problem, whole cities, continents, and worlds can join in antennae-touching communion. The combined intellect of the Ch’Thpch is, to be blunt, terrifying.

The Ch’Thpch seen by Halaorian armed forces during the war were infertile females of the worker and soldier castes. However, a variety of specialized forms have been created over the millennias. Although they use mechanical technology, the species continues to practice active self-evolution, molding their own flesh to fill roles as needed. There are seed-crushers with over-sized mandibles, gunners who can shoot streams of concentrated acid from glands in their abdomen, and even bulbous “tankers,” who exist solely to store food in the most airtight and sanitary place the ancient Ch’Thpch had; their own abdomens.

The most important caste is, of course, the fertile females, the queens who rule each of the city-states of the Ch’Thpch. No one has ever seen a Ch’Thpch queen, although it is assumed they are just as small as their minions. The queens are the center of society, each ruling one or more cities that form a vast interconnected underground network. The largest city-states cover four square miles, reach thousands of feet deep, and contain billions of inhabitants.

Each year, a host of new queens hatch. The princesses are winged, and perform a long-distance flight during which the short-lived males fertilize them. From this one brief flight, each princess gains enough genetic material to last her her entire life. She will lay billions of eggs, giving birth an entire nation. In the modern age, the annual spawning of the queens and mating flight usually takes place aboard starships.

Once a year a massive wave of colonization ships explode out from Ch’Thpch territory, settling every habitable world they can reach. There is no Colonization activity for the rest of the year. Queens can lay eggs very quickly, Ch’Thpch colonies on former Halaorian worlds evinced a growth gate of at least 15% a month. The Ch’Thpch suffer no lack of manpower.

Despite the size difference, the Ch’Thpch are recognized as exceptionally skilled subterranean architects. Their cities are constructed in such a way that they need no artificial temperature or moisture regulation, and often have local groundwater resources dammed and channeled through them. They also seem to be highly skilled at agriculture. Huge fungal gardens and herds of lesser insects, tamed and sculpted into more useful forms, have been found in their cities.

This agricultural activity has not always been good for the worlds the Ch’Thpch colonize or, less charitably, “infest”. On several former Halaorian worlds, their fungal crops spread like wildfire, ruining conventional agriculture and hopelessly corrupting the biosphere. Some of those worlds are now totally overrun by fungus, the native plant and animal life having been killed off by the creeping gray blight and toxic spore clouds.

MILITARY CAPABILITY

In space, the Ch’Thpch have no Terran-scale starships. They do, however, have millions upon millions of tiny, ant-scale warships that obey the mechanics for FTL starfighters. They also have “capital ships” that use the mechanics for Gunboats. Due to their small size, it is very rare to encounter a Ch’Thpch ship that can fit a weapons array that can deal more than one point of damage per alpha strike. Fighting a Ch’Thpch star fleet has been likened to “fighting a blizzard of paper snowflakes.” While each ship can merely inflict a tiny cut, there seems to be an endless number of ships inflicting an infinite numbers of cuts.

On the ground, the Ch’Thpch have no vehicles, or at least none large enough to be treated as such in combat. Their ground forces consist entirely of Infantry Battalions. Although individual warriors are almost defenseless, it is hard for an ant to defend against a boot…, their Infantry Battalions include not 1 MP, but 3 MP’s. In a combat situation Ch’Thpch warriors overwhelm their enemies with quantity, not quality.

HISTORY

The individual Ch’Thpch sub-species marched across Ch’Than, fighting, breeding, and riddling the land with the tunnels and rooms of their subterranean cities. When larger predators threatened, the cities would send out soldiers in the tens of millions, swarming over the opponent, entering their bodies through every orifice, and methodically working their way to the brain. There they would use their mandibles to slice and dismember. Seizures and death soon followed.

Three hundred and fifty million years ago, one of the species competing for the surface of Ch’Than developed the wheel, after observing a beetle roll a ball of mud down a hill. This breakthrough lead the Ch’Than sub-species to abandon self-directed evolution as their exclusive method of development, and a mechanical technology race began. Progress was slow, due to their physical size.

The largest city on Ch’Than at that time contained over 18 million inhabitants.

Meanwhile, many sub-sectors away, and 64 million years ago, the life on a dry world, later known as Haloar, had moved out of the world’s atrophied oceans, and exploded into myriad new forms on the vast, Pangaeaic continental grasslands. Some were insects. Many were not. Suddenly, a new species of Saurian was introduced on to the planet by a genetic seed ship of unknown origin.

Fifty million years ago, the first vacuum tube computer was completed on Ch’Than, at the behest of a dynasty of queens widely regarded as both progressive and insane; the Kri-yahl Dynasty. The work of a hundred generations, it was obsolete long before it was complete. To the tiny residents of Ch’Than, the Terran room-sized construct exceeded the size of their largest city.

At the same time, the saurian species introduced had taken the evolutionary upper hand on Haloar. An unusually bright species of saurian predator, they began building crude shelters on the plains. As herds of food animals migrated back and forth across the equator with the seasons, the saurians followed them, taking the smaller, and weaker, members from the edges of the herds. A few tribes went further; perhaps weary of the constant seasonal migrations, the endless cycle of building and abandoning settlements, so they domesticated some of their prey.

One million years ago, the tribes of Halaor began to speak, and began their slow crawl to civilization. Meanwhile, the ant sub-species of Ch’Than continued to war, as the Kri-Yahl Dynasty expanded their cities at the expense of their neighbors. The Kri-Yahl attained a key advantage by the development of an air corps. At first they were mounted on the backs of large beetles, and later used gliders and aircraft made from carefully harvested, and sculpted, green leaves.

Approximately 50,000 years ago, recorded history began for the people of Haloar, with the development of writing. At the same time the Kri-Yahl Dynasty completed the subjugation of the other ant sub-species on Ch’Than, and achieved a global unity. The defeated were reduced to castes of the Kri-Yahl. Their eggs were taken, and their larvae raised to think as the Kri-yahl.

United, despite themselves, the peoples of Ch’Than turned their scattered cell-minds to the stars. Accordingly, they renamed themselves the Ch’Thpch, The People of Ch'Than. The monomaniacal, ingenious queens of the Kri-Yahl Dynasty prepared to lead their daughters to the unknown lights above.

Six thousand years ago, the Halaorian people emerged from a time of religious wars and hereditary nobility into a renaissance of new art and science. Elsewhere, the Ch’Thpch reached orbit.

Four thousand three hundred and twenty-seven years ago, the progressive Halaorian Republic of Jothyk developed a new calendar, based on the regular flashing of the Tirzhan Pulsar, which was seen in Halaor’s northern hemisphere. At that time, this was the most reliable, and precise, indicator of time.

Two thousand B.C, a Ch'Thpch torch ship arrived at a star system near their homeworld. Within a year, one of the Kri-Yahl queens on this new world had discovered the principle of the Jump drive. However, it took her workers another one hundred years to build the first working example.

In 860 B.C, The Halaorians slipped clear of their atmosphere for the first time. Within sixty years, slower-than-light colony ships were spreading out across the nearby stars.

By 250 A.D, there were over a dozen Haloarian colonies, developing in complete isolation from each other. The Ch’Thpch, meanwhile, had a small, thriving interstellar state, supported by increasingly smaller jump drives.

In 284 A.D. Halaorian scientists on the young colony world of Qoun developed the jump drive. Seizing the opportunity, the colonial governor began construction of a fleet of warships.

In 287 A.D, the first wave of Tenyk's Jump drive equipped warships were completed and arrived at the neighboring colony worlds. In exchange for access to the Jump drive, the colonies acquiesced to Tenyk's overlordship. Control over the member colonies was maintained by the Qounari decision to build and man dedicated courier ships, to which the member-worlds' own STL ships would attach for transit.

Thus, the current Halaorian tendency for courier/battle rider warship design was born of the Qounari method of preserving their early jump drive monopoly.

In 296 A.D, a fleet arrived at Haloar as emissaries of a five-world Halaorian Council, led by the former governor of Qoun. The homeworld refused to join the Council, and appealed to its representatives as their cultural parents. The Council ships responded with a bombardment and the first wave of an invasion.

The subjugation of the populous homeworld was no easy task for the coalition of young colonies. It took thirteen years for the Council to gain control. Shortly before the conclusion of the war, the first, and only, Halaorian Emperor died heirless in his palace on Qoun.

His advisory council, composed of the former governors of the original five colony worlds, refused to select another leader until the position's powers were limited by law. When the Council moved to the new capitol on Haloar in 309 A.D, they had adopted a new power structure, with a Senior Councillor who instigated policy, but had to rely on the votes of the Governor-Generals, each having direct control over a Province, to ratify it.

In the meantime, the Haloarian Council expanded in all directions.

By 405 A.D, the reign of Councillor Saichot, the rulership of the Halaorian Council had devolved into Byzantine levels of bureaucracy and politics. Personal self-interest on the part of the Councilors had created a government in which anyone with enough influence, or money, could get whatever they wanted. While the Senior Councillor nominally set policy, he, or she, could be easily undermined by the Council.

Then, Brood-ships of the Ch’Thpch Nest landed on the young Halaorian colony of Soro’tik. The Halaorians, at first, thought that the tiny invaders were native pests, not even imagining that they might be sentient. For their part, the Ch’Thpch did not, at first, even recognize the “enormous” Halaorians as living things.

As the Ch’Thpch queens attempted to spread across Soro’tik, the Halaorians responded with pesticides, flamethrowers, and, ultimately, nuclear weapons. Some of the Ch’Thpch survived each of the weapons thrown at them, and recovered to put armies on the march again. Whole Divisions of Halaorian troops were overrun and consumed by Ch’Thpch warriors using the same tactics that they had used against the larger predators on their homeworld for millions of years.

The war on Soro’tik was not even perceived as a war by the Ch’Thpch, and the following spring fleets of their small starships swarmed into Halaorian space to colonize more worlds in the annual spawning of the queens. Compared to the Halaorian ships of the line, the largest Ch’Thpch warships were the size of Gunboats. With their massive anti-capital weapons, the Halaorian ships were completely unsuited for the type of war they were forced to fight.

Still, they fought tenaciously. Halaorian battle fleets repeatedly intercepted millions of tiny Ch’Thpch warships escorting the young queens' Brood-ships. Every time the great guns of the Halaorian Council flashed out, a Ch’Thpch ship died. However, for every one killed, another ten swarmed up. Endless numbers of fragile, lightly-armed enemies nibbled the massive, stately warships of the Halaorian Council to death.

The war went badly for the Halaorians. Two complete sub-sectors fell before the seemingly numberless Ch’Thpch in the first year. By 407 A.D, most of the fleet had been annihilated, and another four sub-sectors had fallen. New designs, mounting smaller, but far more numerous turrets, were coming off of the slipways, but the Halaorian Council could see the writing on the wall. The strange waves of insect infestations would, eventually, reach Halaor itself, and when that occurred, they would have to flee as refugees into the stars.

In 2414, after Halaor had fallen, fate intervened to keep the Halaorians from becoming extinct. They stumbled across an unknown species that was trying to fight off a Ch’Thpch colonization attempt. The Halaorians, being far more experienced, and better armed, for the battle than the new species, intervened. The firepower of their refugee fleet, in combination with the firepower of the strangers’ ships, for the first time in history a Ch’Thpch colonization attempt was turned back. Never-the-less, the Halaorians knew that the Ch’Thpch would be back. The strangers introduced themselves as the Terrans and were very grateful for the help.

The Halaorians then proceeded to inform the Terrans just what they were about to face. The Terrans knew that they had to hold onto New Idaho, but did not know if they could retain control of the other Terran Colonies in the sub-sector.

After several Ch’Thpch colonization attempts, salvation arrived in the form of a scientist named Reanna Kormoran. Kormoran was a young xeno-biologist from New Java who, during the New Idaho campaign, had made the leap of logic necessary to recognize the Ch’Thpch as a, possibly, sentient species. While widely considered a loon by the scientific community, President Applegate backed her work.

For two years, Kormoran had been working on a way to translate the pheromone based means of communication of the Ch’Thpch into the spoken language of the Terrans. Armed with batteries of mass spectrometers and legions of biochemistry experts, she had slowly analyzed the pheromone emissions of captured Ch’Thpch soldiers, and built the equipment needed to respond to them in kind.

When the Terrans could understand the Ch’Thpch, and make themselves understood in turn, the war quickly ground to a halt. Neither side had truly comprehended the nature of their enemy for the duration of what came to be known as the Migratory War.

The Terrans could not believe that insects small enough to march into their nostrils could have developed interstellar travel. For years the Halaorian Navy had searched, in vain, for the hypothesized species that had been launching “automated” ships loaded with “bio-weapons” at Halaorian worlds. The Ch’Thpch, for their part, had been unable to comprehend the concept of sentient beings the size of an entire city, and had never even construed that there was a war.

At the end of the hostilities in 2417, the borders were settled as they were. Trillions of Ch’Thpch now lived on the former Terran and Halaorian colonies in six sub-sectors. In addition, the Terrans and Halaorians knew that they were bargaining from a position of grave weakness. The previous invasions had been mere annual spawning flights.

Now that the Ch’Thpch knew they faced a pair of sentient species, the possibility of a real war with the Ch’Thpch queens terrified everyone. Biographers of late President Applegate mention his nightmares of “skies black with Ch’Thpch ships, sweeping over the land and consuming us all.”

So, they simply let the Ch’Thpch keep the worlds they had infested, and the enemy agreed to confine their annual “molting flights” to other directions.

The settlement did not please the Halaorian citizenry.

In the last few decades the Halaorian military has been rebuilt, and is equipped to fight either the Ch’Thpch or a conventional enemy, depending on the situation. However, the war did not change the Council for the better. The politics are still Byzantine and prone to influence peddling. The old joke about the Halaorian Council getting more business done in the hot springs than the Council remains true.

So far the Ch’Thpch have strictly observed their end of the treaty, but remain as enigmatic as before Kormoran's translation devices were available. The extent and power of their empire is unknown, as are their current ship designs and intentions. No trade or regular communication exists between the Terrans, Haloarians, or Ch’Thpch and their people, and it seems that none is desired. Some factions in the Halaorian Council are suggesting that the time for vengeance is fast approaching.

Let me know what you think. :AH

wow, if I'm reading it right, these suckers are small as "individuals" and their threat is due to their numbers ?

Correct, and add to that fact that they are, pretty much, a hive-mind also. So can grind through any problem by sheer brain power. Imagine a planet of these suckers in communion. We are talking trillions per planet. :as

I estimate that the Ch'Thpch number in the quintillions, not trillions, not quadrillions, but quintillions.

Think sentient Army Ants and you will have a good idea as to how deadly these bugs can be. So even the Draugir would die with bugs crawling up into their nostrils and every other orifice they have.

I came up with this idea for the Ch'Thpch after reading a few articles on Earth's Giant Army Ants. Then the idea hit me, what if they became sentient? It immediately sent shivers down my spine and I KNEW I had my ultimate threat to the Galaxy once the Dark Ones and their lackeys are destroyed in the Armageddon War. :ac

The Haloar would likely be the best prepared of the races for when the little threat popped up again after AW. I just can't see them not thinking and planning for several centuries for "just in case" contingencies. The little buggers(literally) would be a racial nightmare for them. Not so much the UST. The damage done to the 2 allies was not equivalent to any stretch of the imagination.

Course the UST would have way more in the way of resources to spend to slow the horde down. The UST could field 10 ships for every Haloar warship that could be fielded. The sheer numbers would make up for the lack of specialized weapons and tactics. Course, the space to be defended by the UST was also much larger, thus diluting the numerical advantage they had.

Haegan, agreed. I see the Hallies as never forgetting just what the bugs did to them. The problem is that even the smallest Terran, or Hallie weapon is still a massive overkill when they hit. The average Bug Heavy Cruiser is the size of a small starfighter, while their Mega-Cap Ships are just the size of a Gunboat.

Imagine a fleet of hundreds of thousands of 'fighters' led by thousands of Gunboats, and all of them FTL capable. Now this fleet is just a migratory fleet. Not even a front line fleet. :as

The Frontline Fleets would number in the millions of 'fighters' and hundreds of thousands of 'Gunboats'. As a suggestion, read up on the historical plagues of Locusts that have plagued mankind. Now set that in the deep black where the migrations are planet-sized.

Insects have been, historically, the most difficult pests for man to remove. Now throw in sentience, and a purpose, which Solidarius gives them, and you have a whole new threat level. :as before Solidarius found them, they were content to just live and let live. he changed all of that. He meant what he said to the Gunny when he said he would kill everything in the galaxy, and save Earth for last.

Those aliens who created Solidarius really did not know what they had done, until it was too late. :vs

point defense Hoe! Seriously, the best ship to fight these are pure PD ships. Which currently I cannot think of a way to build. +2 PD cap is a fleet integrated PD cap.

Agreed, and in that lies the conundrum. Since if all you put into a ship is PD, then it is worthless in a conventional fleet battle. However, all things have their weakness, even the bugs. Can you think of any? :w

One hint of a big one, communications. :bs

Jamming works of course, but with these kinds of numbers they only need one basic communication. "attack!"

It really comes down to, "can i kill them fast enough that they cannot overwhelm me?"

Jamming works of course, but with these kinds of numbers they only need one basic communication. "attack!"

It really comes down to, "can i kill them fast enough that they cannot overwhelm me?"

On your first point, I am sorry, but Jamming will do no good, what-so-ever. Due to that weakness I was speaking of. :w

On your second point, essentially, that is correct. However, if you try it head on... Remember the elephant who kicked over the ant hill and what happened to him. :bs

Massive .... I mean massive... amounts of chemical weapons would be the only way to deal with these critters. But once they get a foothold on a planet , then your screwed.

Gav, yep, exactly. Once they get planetside they begin to dig, and breed. So you have to stop them from getting dirtside in the first place.

As for chem weapons, even on Earth, without genetic engineering pests adapt to the pesticides and become resistant. So yes, you could use chems, but a few generations, bug generations that is, you will have to come up with another chem since they are now resistant to what you had been using.

As I told Haegan, you have to think outside the box with these bugs. Conventional thinking will only get your species consumed by these guys. :as
