The Prime Minister looked at the ring on his finger. He gently stroked it in wonder. The ring looked like gold, but was too light for that heavy metal. The image of a bird of fire was etched into the ring, its long tail circling around the band and touching its beak. It was truly magnificent. "What did the archeologist call it?"
"He called it a pheonix, sir. A bird, that when it dies, is reborn in fire. A creature of myth. They found it in the ruined complex in the mountains. He said it was worn only by a royal govenor. Likely it was the spare for the last govenor, before the Destruction." His liutenant fell silent, having exhausted the knowledge that Dr. Knowlend had told him.
The Prime Minister knew a little more. He knew why the pheonix was used as the seal of the govenors. He knew a lot more of the secret histories then probably any of the professional historians. He also knew what the ring permited the govenor to do, but the defense complex and its hidden storage bunkers were where there is now a southern ocean created by orbital kinetic strikes. The odds of any of that complex having survived was little to none. But, he was going to go look anyway. The first of the subs would be done in two years, and he already had their first mission planned out. Assuming the Eastern Fleet found anything to focus on. As for the phoenix, rebirth. He had an idea. The current flag was a idealized copy of predestruction Numeria. Perhaps a Pheonix wrapped around it?

Two cold merciless eyes watched as the Jannissaries began to enter its patrol area. Any motion or command given was scrutinized for possible use against the intruders.

QUERY: Units entering patrol zone marked as hostile? The Enemy has not been seen in 544.6 years.

ANSWER: Weapons in evidence, intruding units will be tagged as hostile. Will begin analysis of enemy Command and Control procedures.

The watcher faded back into the surrounding vegetation to study these new enemy units.

***

"Colonel, we are about 25 miles from the construction site for the new Outpost, and the other commanders are getting nervous just like me. We have not seen one living thing. Even the normal steppe dwelling animals are absent. Only thing we have seen is a giant vulture overhead every now and then. This is getting spooky,"

Colonel Manchester turned and scrutinized his 2IC, "Rodgers I know, but our orders are to probe this area and see if there is any trace of the men that disappeared... or the cause of that disappearence. You wanna argue with the President?"

No way in hell I want to end up in the stockade, I'm just sayin somethin feels wrong about this place."

I know what you mean. This place gives me the willies."

***

QUERY: Analysis of enemy actions and Command and Control Complete?

ANSWER: Affirmitive, weakness in enemy command structure recognised, main body of troops is controlled by direct neural transmission, along with secondary communications controlled from designated commanders. Knock out commanders and their communications equipment and the main body will be uncontrolled and easier to eliminate.

QUERY: Recommend course of action.

ANSWER: Recommend targeting of unit commanders and radio operators exclusively in the opening stage of the battle. When commanders are neutralized main body should be relatively easy to eliminate. Recommended course of action authorized.

With that the entity faded into the terrain once more, to allow the enemy time to pass and present it's vulnerable commanders.

***

QUERY: Enemy Unit commanders in sufficient density to initiate ambush?

ANSWER: Negative, recommend postponing ambush till commander density allows for 93.2% chance of success.

Colonel Julious Manchester was nervous. He and his battalion were in the forfront of the probes around the landing area. His men were carefully mapping dead areas, hiding places, and ideal points for overlapping fields of fire. Behind him construction equipment was flattening trrain, creating berms and trenches and starting the beginnings of an enormous army base. It was his duty to prevent surprises. He was determined to do so.

The little boy ran up to his mother cluching the book of story art.
"Mommy! Mommy! Can I have this?"
She looked down at the book and sighed. Her Julious was always looking at fantasy rather then reality. she could see the big furry creatures on the cover armed with rifles."Now Julious, why would you want this one? Last week we bought you one?"
"But mom, this one is about a different group of aliens!"
she blinked. A different group? The others looked human, except for being seven feet tall and wide as doorways."Will you take Pinae out when we get home?"
the boys face lit up and he hugged is mom's leg. She pulled a 5 cred coin from her pocket and gave it to him.
The boy ran off to pay for the book of story art and his mother watched him. she knew that the auther had died a year ago from cancer and that the art books were from his story notes. She had sneaked a look at Henries books to see if she found anyting she didn't approve of. The books had been intriguing so she had gone looking for anything else written by Yev Gladsaw. The man had been busy. He had written many theoretical books on racial contacts and even some Science for Dummies books. A very prolific author indeed. But story art books were on the outside, even for him. Then she had found out the man had died ten years ago from cancer and the story art books were being published by his estate.the problem was that his stories had the ring of truth behind them. They felt so.. Well, Real.
She glanced at the clock on the wall and called Julious over. It was time to go home

The Ambassador sat in the lounge area of the super liner Princes Royal. He had been appointed Ambassador to the Numerian Comonwealth only two months ago when the Numerians had asked for formal diplomatic relations after nearly 20 years of trading at Colindare Station. Relativley little was known abot them, not even their internal gate network. They had a fast growing merchant service with nearly 300 hulls cruising USSA and Roman colonies. They had well designed gunboats and relatively inexperienced crews. And they were good at the trading game. Very good.

He watched the Gateway expand from a pinpoint of light to a massive swriling expanse of orange fire. The Princess Royal and her Cruiser honor escort slowly moved into the gateway. He knew What to expect on the other side. He had been told an escort would be waiting for him. The route had already been planned out, even to his shuttle ride to the surface and then to the Visiting Embassy building in Orly. From there imported USSA workers would build the official embassy in about a year. Land had already been set aside for them. 54 acres of land. The embassy building only took up 3 acres at its base and was about 12 stories tall. Accomodations for his marine guard and staff had also been arranged. He looked over at those of his staff who had wanted to see this historic moment. Maybe half of the sixty or so staff were here.
Suddenly, the energies of the gateway subsided and they got their first view of Numerian space. A large space station slowly rotated in the distance, its bronze torus gleaming faintly. The ships around it were so small that they looked like specs of shiny dust. Much closer were four bronze destroyers and another ship that dwarfed them. It was likely the battleship Tiroch d'Tauren. Their escort to Numeria. It slowly fell into place beside the liner and her honor guard. From here it was a 5 hour travel to the Numerian Home planet.
His arrival had signaled "favored" trading staus with Numeria and it looked like their merchants were taking advantage of it. A small cloud of freighters waited for his ships to clear the gate area so they could pass through. Several of his staff got up and went about their business. They would be back in time to get their first view of the blue white marble that would be thier homes for the next three years.
His thoughts were interrupted by Spurius Venator, a hired staffer recruited from Roma. "Sir, may we speak privately?"
His eyebrow went up in surprise. Spurius was a rock. Almost nothing but his wife could shake him. And he never asked for favors. "Yes,follow me." He led Spurius to an emptier spot in the lounge. "How may I help you?"

Spurius looked like he didn't know what to say for a moment. Then, apparently deciding on a course of action, He blurted, "There's not enough noise!"

Huh? thought Morlton, Noise?

"I'm sorry sir. i didn't say that right. I don't sense really anything from the battleship. No mind noise at all. It may well be robotic or lord knows what! "

Moralton thought hard. This was not expected at all. The analysis at Langly said that the Numerians really were not very advanced at all. A robotic ship or psi shields turned it on its head big time. "Thank you, Spurius. Come with me. I need you to tell Linda this."
******

Linda Harriman had been intensely surprised by Spurius's revelations. She did not like surprises like this. You get somebody all nicely researched and niched and they throw a monkey wrench into the works. On the other hand, she always liked a challenge.
The cruiser captians had gone back and started a sensor log review and had determined that the battleship had indeed hailed them and passed the journey coordinates to them. And had done so in real time. No other ships had been near enough to do so except for the destroyers and they were in the wrong direction. So that left out a robotic ship, unless it had a very small crew. Considering the number of hatches and several large landing bays that could be observed, the battleship didn't seem to be heavily automated. Unless it was a trojan. It was theoretically possible that a computer could handle a conversation well enough to fool people for a while... Nah, she was looking for something that likely wasn't there. It was likely a psi screen of some sort. But, why? What would they develop a psi screen for? You didn't spend the effort to develop it and put it into a major ship of war unless it served a deliberate useful purpose. She would keep her eyes open.

*****

Moralton was in the forward lounge again. Numeria had come into view at last. Its twin moons and Lagrange points were visibly industrialized and the orbits were dusted with ships of all sizes and descriptions. The Pontiri Military Station had several destroyers attached and a few more moving away or awaiting clearance. The station was clearly capable of supporting a much larger force. If so, where was it? Motion off to his left showed the battleship Tiroch d'Tauren moving ponderously away towards the Pontiri station. At the same time, in a nearly synchronized motion, the four honor guard cruisers peeled off from their positions and began the long journy back to the Gate. He looked down upon the cloud swirled globe below and sighed. Alien races always had their own surprises, be it culture, or diet, or god knew what else. The Numerians were genetically human, just like him, but seemed to be a religiusly oriented culture. one of the things he had learned at the State Department was to never mess with anothers religion. It got them cranky. His valet, Sam, already had his things packed and waiting for him on the shuttle. The liner would be providing passage down to the Orly space port and the Numerians were to provide transport from there on out. He realized suddenly what had been nibbleing at the edge of his mind. On every planet he had ever been to, he had been able to study its people, its architecture, and its culture long before he had arrived. There was so little really known about the Numerians that he had covered it in less then an hour. This would be a challange.

*****

The shuttles overflight over the vast city of Orly had been instructive. Even from above it was a mix of the old and the new with broad swaths of green growing things. The nearby harbor had looked like it had ships with sails mixed in with massive super freighters. It all gave him an impression of the old world in transition to the new. The sudden influx of new technologies and ideas would be wreaking havoc with some parts of their culture. It often did with the lower technolgy cultures. Was that why they had been isolationists for so long? Why, after 20 years did they suddenly request an American diplomat? Why not a Roman one? He had asked the Roman Ambassador to America for any information the ambassador could provide. When asked why, Moralton had told Ambrosius about his upcoming assignment. The Roman had been miffed to say the least. The Numerians had not requested an Ambassador from the Romans. Ambrosius's language had been colorful, to say the least. He smiled at the memory. It had seemed like a good idea to smooth badly ruffled feathers and so he had approached Shakiri d'Ambrach, the Numerian Ambassador to America, about it. She had looked blankly at him and then started laughing. As it turned out, the Numerians had just not thought about it. They saw the Roman Republic as badly fractured and so had maintained relations with each of its provinces seperately. It, she had pointed out, had worked quite well so far and, unless matters changed, would likely continue to work. There was just something about the way the Romans veiwed the univers that made the Numerians uncomfortable. she hadn't elaborated even when pressed. There was one other thing he had learned as well that he just couldn't get out of his head. They didn't allow immigration. He had learned that from Leroy at the State Department. It was highly unusual to say the least. It didn't fit the Psycke profile done at Langly either. The profile had said that the Numerians were highly accepting of strangers and easily accepting non-Numerians into their circles of friends. They took their friendships seriously. So why no immigration? It was something he mused at until the shuttle landed.

The arrival ceremony itself was brief. He had alomost reached the exit hatch for the shuttle when the American National
Anthem had begun to play. When he stepped outside onto the mobile ramp he saw an honor guard consisting of 200 or so
Numerian Soldiers in dark green BDU's with swords and rifles forming a corridor to a small fleet of black ground cars.
They did do a good parade rest, he thought. To their right was a small 20 piece band in light blue Numerian Fleet
uniforms. He waited until the American Anthem finished playing before continuing down the ramp.

waiting next to the mobile stairway was an older man with a large balding spot in his salt and red hair. Moralton
offered his hand in greeting. The old man took it and shook it properly, then spoke,"Welcome to our Home, Ambassador
Moralton. My name is Gal d'Tauren and I formally give you Nali, and will be your liason with the authorities while you
get settled. I know that you are likely eager to see were you will be staying while your Embassy is being built. Your
marines have already taken the cargo shuttles contents to their barracks, and will also be taking you and your staffs
luggage as well. Arrangement have been made with your Colonel Albert Sanchez to ensure that your equipment and facilities
are secure. If you would follow me?" The Numerians hand gestured towards the waiting shiny black limos.

As Moralton walked down the ceremonial red carpet to his black limosine, he realized that the cars ahead had American
marines holding open the doors. They were sharply dressed in Marine formal dress, marred only by the fact that they were
armed with standard issue assault rifles. The rifles were shined up to be sure, but were still field issue. They were
not about to embaress themselves or America.

He arrived at the limo and snapped a salute at the parade rest seargent waiting for him. The man even had spotless white
gloves. The Seargent snapped a salute back and said,"sir, your transportation awaits. The rest of your staff will follow
in the remaining vehicles. Welcome to Orly."

"Thank you Sergeant. I am hoping it will be a good experience for us all." Moralton got into the specious vehicle and was
followed by the Numerian Liaison. He looked over at the old man and said, "I wouldlike to meet with the Prime Minister
and his cabinet as soon as we are settled in. How does tomorrow sound to you?"

Gal chuckled. "The Prime Minister has expressed a sinccre interest in meeting you, sir." In a much more subdued tone he
continued,"Unfortunately, the Trade Minister, Alurhia d'Galvin, is not available. Her husband is in the hospital. I'm
afraid it's serious. The rights have already been read and the Song of Leaving sung. He will be missed by many who called
him friend." Gals eyes were now closed and his face showed grief and loss. The rest of the drive was quiete as each man
was lost in their own thoughts. Life intruded even here.

Numeria, August 2259

The Numerian stood in front of the ancient device resting in front of him. The device was cracked and broken in a dozen places but it still hummed with power pulled from the solar rays that touched it. At first glance, it seemed to be made of Tri-Tanium, but upon closer inspection one would soon realize that is was an exotic alloy of several comparatively plentiful minerals. The alloy was rare in the extreme and carried a value beyond mere price. It was circular with an inner ring covered with markings the Numerians knew to be star constellations. It was thought to be the last known example of the devices in the galaxy.

To the consternation of the priest the device powered up once more generating small tremors throughout the region. After all these millenia this device was powering up. The priest was curious and touched a small glowing object on the ruined device. The object shimmered and joined with the circular object. It lost its circular form and the liquid metal spread itself across the wall creating a large puddle. Then slowly it began to reform, to repair itself.

<<Brother Aein, please come to the alahiem contemplation room. And bring Suchias and Hanlen>>

<<Coming Master.>>, replied Aein.

The Aero’Bei Master stilled his mind and watched the metals ebb and flow. He knew it was doing so with a purpose, it was just that he did not know what that purpose was. Sometimes the best way to learn, was to watch.

He heard the rapid pater of soft soled boots head down the corridor and slide to a stop outside the room. It was quiet for several seconds. The Master let a smile touch his face for a moment. He could imagine them correcting the lay of their robes and making sure that all was in order before opening the door. One always entered a place of thought with proper focus. His grin grew wider. Especially when a Master of the Order was using it. He smoothed his grin away. It wold not do for them to see it.

The carved door opened slowly, its hinges making not a sound. The three brothers entered in single file and bowed to him. "You are required to observe and report. I will contact the Grand Master and see what is to be done. Brother Aein, remember the forms."

Aein nods back, his mind already focused on taking in every detail that he could see and feel.

The Master stepped out. Once he was out of sight, he broke into a brisk walk and reached out to the Grand Master with his mind. As calm as he was trying to be, he knew somehow that this was momentous.

As the pool slowly coalesced the observing Aero’Bei members could tell it was once again reforming the rings of exotic metal alloy. In under an hour the rings were back, only this time they were whole and not broken into pieces.

To the astonishment and consternation of the observers seemingly random symbols began to flare into life with a light that seemed to be coming from within the symbols themselves and not from the rings. All told nine symbols quickly flashed into life.

Once the ninth symbol flashed into life the device shook the entire area with its barely contained power. The people of Orly could only describe it as like being in an earthquake.

The sensors in the region began to fail as the power rating on the device climbed to unimaginable levels and spiked them into the red. Yet, the observers could feel something was not quite right and it could not finish activating itself. A few moments later all of the observers, except for the Master, began to get sleepy as they heard a soothing voice in their minds, telling them it was all right and everything was ok. Only a moment later the Master was all alone and the voice began to speak once again.

Once the voice convinced the Aero’Bei Master it was a friend it began to suggest that certain symbols on the pedestal in front of the ring be touched in a specific sequence. The Master was only too happy to do as the voice asked, afterall, the voice was from a dear friend.

When the ninth symbol was activated the thing created something like a doorway similar to an Apollonian Gate, or more precisely it created a stable wormhole. When the energy swirl in the gate setteled down once more, then someone stepped through.

"By the Dream!" was all he said.

The Master took a deep breathe and bowed deeply. He mind spoke. <<Welcome to Numeria, honored visitor. I am Pelion d'Reghian, a Master of the Forms of Aero’Bei.>>

The being who stepped out of the gate caused Pelion to gasp in wonder! The person had a glowing light and luminence surrounding it that made him feel at peace and as safe as if comforted by a parent when scared. He just exuded tranquility.

"My child, your people have called, and now we answer your call. Only we answer it with the gravest of news. The Dark Ones are stirring once again. You pledged yourselves to the fight against the dark, now we hold you to your pledge."

"In four months you will be visited by a being from another human power. One who claims to represent a Corporation called Wegman-Yamashiro. He is legitimate, but their future is dark indeed. We want you to treat with this man and his corporation. Use it to help you rise back into the universe. You are needed." With that the being turned and headed back into the ring.

Pelion stood watching the gateways glimer fade away. He was awed and peaceful at the same time. It was not everyday that he had an angel walk into his contemplation room and tell him something like this. Well, ok, it had never happened before. He shook himself once and then checked on his slumbering companions. They were fine. He smiled. Perhaps it was best that he let them sleep it off. In the meantime he would order that a guide be posted here day and night until the Wegman-Yamashiro man came. Wegman-Yamashiro. He mouthed the word. What an odd sounding name. But then, what else could you expect from aliens then strange names? Perhaps it was best that the guide be from the Retreat.

He sighed. Life would never be the same. He knew that the Sanei would have an official here from the Prime Ministers office until the Wegman-Yamashiro man came. He hoped the official would not cause too much disruption. The Gunneiregh was a place of training, of contentment, of finding yourself inside the Forms. Outsiders brought their own imperfect Forms into the Gunneiregh and distracted the students from the perfection of the Forms. It took months to smooth it all out again.

He walked down the hallway, subconciously whistling a drinking song.
